Video Drivers
« on: July 10, 2002, 04:29:44 PM »
Well, if it aint broke don't fix it right?

I upgraded my video drivers and now my video is running slower with less quality.  I tried to go back to my old drivers and I either didn't do it right, or something that I had tweeked way back when isn't tweeked any more and its costing me both speed and quality.

My question is:  How should I proceed?  Should I reload completely?  Should I try loading the new driver again?  Should I try rolling back to a previous driver?

Suggestions please.

Remove the drivers, reboot into VGA mode, and remove all references in the registry, and files in the system32 directory, then reboot again.  Reinstall the older drivers and see if all is well again.

But first, what version of DirectX are you running?  The newer drivers are optimized for the newer DirectX.  That can impact performance.

Dropping back to an older driver can be impacted by having a newer version of DirectX as well.  try reinstalling DirectX 8.1, the hooks may need to be reset.

I know I am late on this one but if you do a repair rather then a install with your directx, it will probably fix it.

Well, actually I decided to just start over, I upgraded to XP pro and reloaded with the latest drivers.  I'm running much better.

See Spade, if we had posted those links we could have saved the kid from the horrors that could be XP!

XP is the best effort Microsoft has put forward yet.  Still doesn't compare to any Unix based OS, but good enough for the masses.

Gonna have to petition Spade for the links.  And Opie, if we wanna compare OSes, then we have to be fair.  The GUI for *nix isn't as good as for Windoze, yet.  But it is most definitely getting there.
But then, Mr. Gates can only DREAM of the stability *nix has.  They are getting there, but not yet.

Oh, and for any M$ employees that are reading this...  ditch the intrusive crap, I prefer to manage my own systems thank you!
