To overclock or not,
That is the question,
Whether tis more prudent go stock,
Or get an AMD rock.

With processors at 2ghz+ and 1.33 for $70 are there any real reasons to overclock the processor, and take the chance of having to buy another one? :hotbouns: For the same amount you could always just upgrade the CPU.

Video cards? To overclock or not? How much gain do you get, and is it worth the extra wear and tear and potential death :hotbouns: of (at least in my case) the most expensive component in the system.

Back in the old days, when we still used to use ink part of the time, the processor companies used to build their chip with really high specs. They would then turn around and sell them at whatever speed that they marked the chip at. You could have a Pentium 200 that was actually a Pentium 233 MMX. These chip could then be over-clocked by about 50% of their rated speed. This held pretty much true for both AMD and Intel up until about the time of the Pentium III. At this point in their arms race that both companies started selling their chips rated to be as close to spec as posible. He who had the fastest chip won, at least for a couple of days. Old history for most of us, but I'm sure that a Dragon was probably still in diapers then and could use the brief education. (He BTW, has an over-clocked system.) :compute:

Now days, with the way systems are very close to spec, to overclock a system you really need to know what you are doing. Overclocking an Athlon is not for the faint of heart. The new chips also produce an incredible amount of heat. Even if you succed in overclocking a newer chip the performance gain is normally under 5% total for the system.

So to answer your question in the longest way possible for me, just spend the money and upgrade.

My video card is something I personally don't care to mess with. I don't have the spares in my desk. Just upgrade this too. It's really worth spending the money for one of the newer cards.

Personally, I am in favor of OCing the Vidcard, but I would wait until it is starting to get beatdown by the newer apps.

The CPU? Ain't even going to touch that. You try OCing that, and you are messing with more than the clock cycles for the CPU. You impact the entire PCI/AGP bus architecture, as well as the memory and anything else on the motherboard. That can endanger ANYTHING in the system.

Not worth the risk.

At this time, you don't really need to overclock.. (in my opinion) you have a 1.33 CPU and an awesome vid card. As Zwarrior said, wait until the Applications are really asking for it....

HOWEVER.................

***IF you are going to overclock... overclock the video card. Overclocking the CPU can affect other things, such as the PCI bus, AGP bus, etc... depending on what you do... IF you are going to mess with the CPU, do alot of reading, unless you have the money to buy a new one. Here's a question: What are you trying to accomplish in overclocking?

if the main goal is framerates, just overclock the video card.
Will the card being overclocked affect a whole lot? --> It depends on what video card, the manufacturer, and the overclockability of the specific card. Some cards overclock great, others don't... just my thoughts..... :hubba:

i say if you have a cpu that is over 1.20 GHz then DONT overclock.... BUT... in my case with a P3 700 i need to overclock (its running vary stable at 933MHz and i could probebly go higher with my ABit MBoard but i dont want to push it)......

As for the GPU unless you have an older card (lets say older than 6 months) i wouldent bother with it. there is too much at risk and the praformance boost isnt worth a $100+ paper weight....

as for the final thought.... ....If you whant to over clock LOOK INTO IT FIRST...
like if you find a prog that will 'Tweek' your vid card, it most likely whont have a safty (i.e. i DLed a prog for the vid card i had and when i started to turn up the clockrate and voltage bad things started to hapen that i almost couldent fix).

Speaking as one who has kicked the habit, I understand totally. Anyone who has had the displeasure of sitting next to me at a LAN Party when I turned on my PC, or the EXTREME pleasure of sitting by me when the system is shut off, you will find out what fan noise can be! My wife realized it the first time she was in my office, and I shut down the system for cleaning.
"My God, it is so quite in here now!"
That was with the other 5 machines still running!
I quite the OC work because I spent more time trying to tweak 1MHz more out of the system, then I did playing the games I wanted the speed for! I still try to get the system as fast and stable as possible, but I am not focused on it anymore.

The first thing is an AMD doesn't rock it should be a rock. trash it and get the fastest chip on the face of the earth. any P4 2.0+ will o/c at 3.0+ the 3.066 at 4.0+
Oh did you see the artical on the performance cheating the AMD did. They fix the nubers so they would look better. Hay lets just change the performance standerds (again for the third time).

I've got a little file server with a P3 300 that's been over clocked to around 450 for about two years. Standard heat sink and fan only. It crashes about once every four months.

I have never been an overclocker....tweaker yes but overclocker....NO. I believe that you can get more out of your machine by understanding the OS, memory management, and system resources. Most hardware now days are already overclocked and don't have allot of overhead. If it did, the manufacture would utilize it and sell it for more money. They push it to the specs they feel will give you a product that will make it past thier warranty period and hopefully last you for a couple of years. Once you move into the overclocking arena, you are playing with a time bomb. Tweak your system, have sufficient memory and a nice video card and you will be miles ahead. Just my opinion.

I ran it at 700 for a week and HATED it...

I defenetly noticed the diffrence....

so... untill I can aford to upgrade, im staying at 933MHz

BUT, When I do upgrade Im getting somthing that I dont need to Overclock....

And I think that even you would agree that I have a point!.!.!.!.!.

You may have a point when concidering your Pentium chip.....TRUE! But again, most of the new chips are already tweaked to the safe limits for stability, cooling, and hardware specs. Not against overclocking, just elect not to do so myself. I allowed someone to overclock my video card once to show me the big gain and it became very unstable and started tearing the graphics. Scared me to say the least, I was very concerned after spending $450.00 on the card that possibly it could have been damaged just to get a few more frames in a game.....Did not like the risk involved. Everybody enjoys doing different stuff to their PC's to get it to their liking so if you like to overclock, go for it. I just have never felt the risk was worth the gain. Its great you are able to acheive such a big difference on your CPU but I think that is rare and has some to do with the P3 chip you have, most are not that giving.
