Daemon Tools (similar to Game Drive)
« on: January 22, 2004, 08:58:32 PM »
I've been using a utility for about 2 months, and have not had any issues.  The utility is called Daemon Tools.  It works similar to Game Drive but is free for non-commercial use.  Here is their disclaimer:

This program is NOT freeware.
If you don't use this program for commercial purposes you do not have to register a license and are allowed to use this software for free. But if you want to support our work you may do so, of course. To register Click Here. This private license is always limited until the next version of this software is released.
If you use this program commercially (e.g. in a company, internet cafe etc.) somehow you must license it! To register Click Here. You will find all details there.
You are only allowed to use this program if you are a legal owner of the original CD and you want to create or use a backup of your original CD.
Feel free to use this package in other FREE products, as long as you leave this package unmodified and include credits to author. If you want to include this software in a commercial product plz contact us for permission!
This software is provided "as is". The authors cannot be held responsible for any loss of data or other misfortunes resulting from the use of this program.
Likewise the authors cannot be held responsible for the use or misuse of this software.

You still need a burning program that can create a 1:1 copy.  They have a list of recommended burning programs. I have been using a trial version of Alcohol 120%.

My concern would be that the burner software will not duplicate the SecureCD stuff, so you still have the problem of needing the original CD to get around the CD check.

Am I wrong or is this correct?

My issue is that it has no support for .VCD extension. So now I have to go back and re-rip all of my CD:mad:

Points of clarification.

The burning software has to handle the security stuff, daemon tools has emulations for safedisc, securrom, laserlock, and RMPS. So if you can get a 1:1 copy then you don't need the disk to run the program.

Daemon tools will not create 1:1 copies.  It will mount drive images in I think 4 virtual drives, maybe more.

I hadn't mentioned it before because I was testing it.  I don't like recommending things I haven't tried.

I was looking at my GameDrive and noticed that I didn't purchase a copy, I purchased a years subscription.  That's not cool.  I really don't like paying for my software, let alone paying for it multiple times.

Just a note, I don't mind paying a bit for software, but I prefer "free" over "pay" anyday.

Gamedrive is much more user friendly plus I like the fact that it compresses the files and takes up less hardrive space I only have 200 gig.
