Apparently Dell Computers has changed their internal policy about supporting the removal of spyware from customers computers, to include even sending them to a site that tells them how... "We will not do it!"

I don't get it. Are people pissed because Dell won't help them remove spyware? If the spyware wasn't installed at the factory, how can you blame them? I have idiot friends who load all kinds of crap off of the internet that is riddled with spyware. I tell them time and time again not to and they do it anyway. Now I don't help them any more, I just laugh when they call wanting my help. If they're not smart enough to stay out of trouble, oh well. I hate spyware as much as anyone, but it's time to stop babysitting people. The minute Dell starts helping people with all of their spyware problems, is the same instant that their overhead starts to go up, and their prices will follow. It's common sense people.

It's time for people to stop being stupid when it comes to using a computer. The days of tech support holding everyone's hands are over. If you want hand holding, you can call a pay per call number now and pay for it by the minute. I have absolutely no problems with this logic.

I agree with Kid. People want to stay ignorant of what their computer actually does. They just want to point and click and they get all pissed off if it does not work. People do not want to take the responsibility to read and learn. This will no longer work. Dell is a hardware reseller they should not have to do app support as well. Time to stop the ignorance and stupidity. RTFM.

The bone of contention here is not that they won't help with the spyware, as a support person I totally agree with that.

The problem lies in that they aren't even allowed to say "It appears that you may possibly have spyware on your system. Goto such-and-such site, download the app, and check. I can't support that, but they have support there for it."

But then, I guess the Lusers would want them to support that software as well.

I think the smartest course of action would be for them to relay people to the Dell website, and from there have a place where people can find info on spyware.

The big problem with this whole thing is that companies like Dell and Gateway don't like making recommendations to a certain specific company, because then you open yourself up to a liability that either:

A) That company really isn't that reputable in their spyware removal software.

B) Some other spyware company that you didn't know about or didn't want to list files suit against you for unfair practices (ala Microsoft style)

I agree with everyone, spyware is a bigger problem than spam now. I have a system at work that I will have to reload because I cannot figure out how to get rid of the spyware I have on it. It would spawn popups when I was opening Control Panel, or Windows Explorer for pete's sake. I deleted every reference I could find in the registry, and everywhere else. The popups have stopped but now my system crashes when the popups try to spawn and I have to reboot. It's complete BS that anyone should be allowed to install something that is this intrusive, and I would literally like to slice and dice the people that make these programs. They need to die a horrible death. OK maybe that's a bit harsh but it really makes me livid...

I found that a combo of Ad-Aware and McAfee Anitvirus does a pretty good job of getting all of it. Ad-Aware misses a few progs.

I use a combo of Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. That gets most of the issues on my system.

Then I use ESafe Desktop 3.0 for my AV and firewall.

I myself have worked too many NON PAID overtime hours (thanks Clinton) for the countless idiots who download crap like webshots, weatherbug, and every free item they can find. I have tried to educate these as***les at work and friends as well, but now I have the answer. I'M SORRY, I DON"T HAVE TIME THIS MONTH, but maybe next month I can help you. Oh and by the way, we will need all your original disks (or I need to reimage it at work) and when we are done , you will have to redo everything. Oh and by the way (for coworkers) the security audit triggered an investigation into your web surfing and my I.T. regional manager will be coming to interview you for possible disciplinary action, since these ARE company machines.

It is AMAZING how quickly people will learn to go BUY things that are not riddled with spyware, and how quickly employees STOP wasteful surfing if they think they are in serious trouble.

Friends or coworkers or relatives...it doesn't matter, they want US to fix it for free, at their convenience, and show me in 10 seconds how to prevent it in the future. no sorry..i pass...RTFM...and if you can't then get AOL with spam and spyware protection and pay for your ignorance...
