PLEASE HELP!!!!
« on: November 17, 2003, 09:51:35 PM »
Ok, here's the deal: My comp was rebooted XPpro, and was logging me in.  I moved my chair, which yanked out the mouse cord, and like the retard I am, I hit the restart button.  Now, it pops up the "unofficial restart" message (Asking me if I want to start in Safe Mode, or reload my last working config, or start normally, etc).  That, in itself isn't the problem though.  Regardless of which option I chose, it loads the beginning of XP, and then very quickly flashes what I think might be the "critical error" message XP gives when something really goes south...Then it restarts.  It loops like that ad nauseum.  I tried booting from my XP install disk to run a format and try again, but as soon as it's done loading the install files, it displays the "Setup is starting Windows" message, then stops.  I've let it sit for 12 hours and the result hasn't changed.  I checked the disk  on a friend's comp, and it loads up fine on his.  So...Any idea what the problem is, and also, how in god's name do I fix it?!
HELP!!

Without seeing the computer for myself I can olny guess.  My guess is that when the mouse cord was yanked out the somehow the mother board got damaged.  Was this a USB mouse or old style?  If USB, was it plugged into the front of the case or back?

The mouse is a PS2 style mouse.  I seriously doubt it's the motherboard, though at the moment I have no real way of checking that.  The problem seems to be with the OS or the hard drive.

If you are looking to reload, you need to wipe the partition off the drive, then load.

If it is hanging still, odds are that there is a hardware issue with the system, not the drive, since you have already established that the media is good.

Then you have a hardware problem.  Try another mouse first and see if that works for you.  If not then you jacked up your mother board.

Z,

Spade and I are in the process of getting satilite system installed. Mine is in now and I do not have e-mail as of today... But the system has a download of up to 2 meg, and an upload of 56K. Throughput though, is right at 900K.

Anyway I expect that Ken will be online soon say about three weeks. We have to run a bunch of cable through his place. Take Care...

I would suggest getting a system disk, or hard drive disk, and trying it to see if you can boot from it. Then format c and try to reinstall the OS.  ZW, you had a good link to something like this I think.

Hey guys!  My first guess would be hardware as well if you are unable to get to safe mode and or unable to boot from a floppy and get a dos prompt then you have a hardware problem.  If you have a usb port, you could try a usb mouse and see if it will boot.  My guess is like Opie said that you shorted something in your PS2 port causing damage to your Mobo.  You might have to disable the PS2 port in your Bios depending on what Mobo you have you may not have that option.
