Need help with my moms comp -- Im clueless
« on: November 09, 2003, 10:46:41 PM »
When trying to add a new program the message "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in Safe Mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.  Contact your support personnel for assistance."

So far weve made sure its not in Safe Mode, and she cant launch the system restore becouse it wont let her back date beyond todays date.

and she cant get into the group policy editor, but she was able to change the Windows Installer from Manual to Automatic, but she cant change it from stopped to running.

you guys are our last HOPE! otherwise we might have to blank out everything on the hard drive, in hopes of it being fixed that way.

She would appreciate any help!

Have a meeting tonight, but post if no one helps tonight.  I may be able to help tomorrow, provided I get back from your place in time to do practice. ;)

Well i was talkin to opie and he said that reinstalling xp would hopefully fix the problem but he said to run it by Andy 1st just to make sure

then i started going through all the links you posted and on the first one it said for the resolution how to fix it

well..  i got about to here before i got lost again

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesMSIServer

In the right pane, double-click ImagePath.
In the Edit String dialog box, make sure that the string in the Value data box contains the correct path of the Msiexec.exe file on your hard disk that you determined earlier in step 1.

not sure if the answer for that is on that page since the instructions were pretty straight forward but i couldnt see them 8/

so im not sure if thiers an easier fix then to run out to Wallart and buy xp again (dont have the CD) but maybe thier is a cheaper way

I have to pass on helping you tonight.  I forgot that tonight is Mrs. ZW's dinner party for her birthday.  If I miss that, I may have to go live somewhere else for a while.

As far as the instructions you see there, are you familiar with Regedit?  It can be daunting to mess with the registry.  Post where in those instructions you get lost, or email me.

SYMPTOMS
When you try to add or remove a program, you may receive the following error message:

Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. You may be running in safe mode or Windows Installer may not be correctly installed.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:
The Windows Installer files that are on your hard disk are damaged or are missing.

-and-
You install or remove a program that uses the Windows Installer Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) package file (.msi). For example, this may occur when you try to install Microsoft Office on your computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use the following methods.
Method 1: Re-Register the Windows Installer
To re-register the Windows Installer, verify the location of the Msiexec.exe file on your hard disk and in the Windows Registry, and then re-register the Windows Installer. To do so:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
Verify the location of the Msiexec.exe file on your hard disk. To do so:
Click Start, and then click Search.
Click All files and folders.
In the File name box, type msiexec.exe, and then click Search.
In the search results, make a note of the location of the Msiexec.exe file.

The location of the Msiexec.exe file should be similar to the following example, where Drive is the drive where Windows is installed, and %Windir% is the folder where Windows is installed:
Drive:%Windir%System32

An example of this is C:WindowsSystem32.
On the File menu, click Close.
Verify the location of the Msiexec.exe file in the Windows Registry. To do so:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

Right about here is where i get lost

Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesMSIServer

In the right pane, double-click ImagePath.
In the Edit String dialog box, make sure that the string in the Value data box contains the correct path of the Msiexec.exe file on your hard disk that you determined earlier in step 1.

For example, if the Msiexec.exe file is located in the Drive:WindowsSystem32 folder on your hard disk, the correct path of the Msiexec.exe file in the Value data box is the following, where Drive is the drive where Windows is installed:
Drive:WindowsSystem32Msiexec.exe /V

If the Value data box does not contain the correct path, make the appropriate changes to correct the path, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.
Start your computer in safe mode, and then register the Msiexec.exe file. To do so:
Shut down, and then restart your computer.
Press F8 after you receive the following message:

Please select the operating system to start
On the Windows Advanced Option menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
If you use a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the appropriate operating system from the list that is displayed, and then press ENTER.
Log on to the computer.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK:
msiexec /regserver

Shut down, and then restart your computer in standard mode.
If the issue persists and you still receive the error message that is described earlier in the "Symptoms" section, follow the steps in Method 2.

Shut down, and then restart your computer in standard mode.
If the issue persists and you still receive the error message that is described earlier in the "Symptoms" section, follow the steps in Method 2.

Logon to the computer and then do a Start -> Run.  In the command line type "regedit"

Within RegEdit, browse to the location noted below
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> MSIServer

"In the right pane, double-click ImagePath.
In the Edit String dialog box, make sure that the string in the Value data box contains the correct path of the Msiexec.exe file on your hard disk that you determined earlier in step 1. "

After you click on the MSIServer, you should see values in the left pane.  One of them should be ImagePath.  Double click on it and make sure that it has the same path as the MSIEXEC.EXE that you found earlier.  If it doesn't change it, but add the " /V" on the end as well.

Once that is done, you will need to reboot the system.  While it is coming up, and before you see the Windows graphic, start pounding on the F8 key.  When you get the text menu choose "Safe Mode" and press ENTER.

Logon to the computer and then do a Start -> Run.  In the command line type "msiexec /regserver"

Reboot and have the computer come up in standard mode.

How's that?  make more sense?  I know that M$ documentation is a bit of a pain to follow sometimes.

Well, you don't have to pound the F8 key, you can gently press it and hold it down too. :lol
