I had a message sent to me that pointed me to this article regarding rounded IDE cables.

Although I will agree with the author regarding the interference issues, I have to differ with him on the cooling statement. After all, the point of the rounded cable is to open up the flow of air in the case, and a flat cable won't allow that.

What do you think?

Personally, I love mine. They opened up my case a lot and made it much easier to manage the cables and play with the jumpers. I will not go back, but am looking forward to serial ATA for internal firewire off the northbridge controller.

I agree. I haven't really had a problem with data corruption, but it certainly made my case more airflow friendly.

The new m/b's that are comming out now will use a smaller round cable and run at 150 dma. The flat cables will be and are old tech. Ausus P4g8x has a serial raid! This will be my first choice in new m/b's. Others are making a serial pci controller card.

hmm lets see where to begin...

1) I don't have rounded cables, if I had the money lying around I would probably get a set.

2) I have spent time routeing my IDE cables so that they obstruct as little as possible.

4) Give me proof! This article doesn't give any tests, any specifics, but makes definitive statements, c'mon give me something to back it up.

So my opinion is that rounded cables are cool (as in 1980's that's cool man), look good, don't appear to cause data problems (at least none that I have ever heard of), can be easier to use, might actually increase airflow throughout the case. So why not get em if you want and have the money to blow.

I do wish that they twisted the wires like in Cat 5 cable that would solve all the crosstalk...

i have some jimmy rigged cable runners.. i took some of this flex plumping plastic piping and cut off the ends, pulled out the inner plumbing tube. Took the plastic outer sleeve, sliced it down the middle and fed my cables into it... looks kind of cool too! iT's that cobalt blue ....

From what I read and observed there, the rounded cables rejected a ton more noise than the flat cables, and there wasn't much difference between shielded and unshielded.

Verdict? Stick with the rounded unshielded cables!

Makes you wonder what the motivation for the first article was. I'm looking forward to the serial ATA, that'll help a lot with case clutter.

Actually I've thought about designing a case that has channels for the cables on the side/under the motherboard.

My only commet is the phone companies have been using rounded un-twisted cables for years and we all talk across the state on it. If there was data loss or interference don't you think they would change. Actually flat cables have a higher surface area for noise but require less labor to construct. Cost is the driving factor for all manufactures and that is why we have flat cables. Just my opinion!

Actually, years ago, the phone companies began installing insulated and grounded cables, because the cables were so noisy. Remeber way back when, when you could here the noise on the line if there was a thunderstorm?

Yeah I used to get Links of the files i whanted to DL then b4 I whent to bed DLed them all with DownLoad Excelerator

And By the time I left for school they where done or close enuff to being done that I could log off and finish when I got home..

The only way to reduce the signal problems associated with the old paper wrapped wires was to run about 500 volts down the line to dry the paper out. I know of a couple of military bases that still have it heavily installed.

I bet ZW remembers when the wires had no insulation.:lol

No, but I do rememeber a story about a farmer who used has barbed wire fence for a telephone line. Everthing was fine, until he picked up the phone, then whatever you did, don't touch that fence!
