You have got to check this utility out.  it will check the transfer speeds of your drives, etc and report any issues it finds!

I used it to troubleshoot my BF2 problem and fixed the load issues because of it!

Changed the transfer mode from PIO (the lowest) to "let the BIOS decide", which resulted in UltraDMA5.  BIIIIIG change in speed.
