Cooking and Recipies / Opie's Hot Wings v.1.0
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:01:21 PM »
This is not a recipe you should attempt if you don't like hot, I mean HOT, wings.  I wasn't attempting to make them so hot but it turned out that way anyway.

Ingredients:

1 bag of frozen party wings (Unseasoned)
1 1/2 cups of your favorite dried peppers  (I used new mexico chilies)
1/4 cup Balsamic Vinegar
1/4 cup of White Vinegar
1 or 2 cloves of garlic, minced finely
1/2 cup of chopped onion
1/2 cup of water
1 stick of butter
1/4 cup of honey
1/4 cup of ketchup
juice from 1 fresh lemon
1 bottle of Lousiana Hot Sauce  (Yes I cheat and it saves 2 hours of cooking to make my own)
1 Roma Tomato diced

Ok guys, and maybe a girl or two, start out by toasting your peppers over medium high heat.  Add a little oil to your pan and get it hot.  Toss in the peppers and let them toast.  You have to turn them quite often to keep them from burning.  That means no questing or fragging during the cooking.
After about 2 minutes add enough water to cover them and let them simmer for about another 10 minutes.  Now that 10 minutes have passed and you have opened another beer, take them off the heat and drain them.  Once the peppers are well drained put them in a blender.

Now it's blender time.  Add both vinegars and the water to the peppers and blend on high for 2 minutes.  You can add a pinch of salt at this time if you want but I think it has enough salt anyway.

Next we are going to cook the onions, garlic and tomato.  Start by melting the butter in a sauce pan and then adding the onions and tomato.  Add the WHOLE bottle of hot sauce to the pan.  <evil grin>  Cook this mix for about 5 minutes.  Remove from heat and add to the blender.

Almost blender time again....

Add the ketchup, honey and lemon juice to the blender.  (Yes, I just bought a new blender so I had to make something with it)  BLEND!!  Blend like your life depended on it...or for about 2 minutes.  Keep blending until until the sauce has a nice even appearance to it.  Return this mix to the sauce pan and simmer for another 15 minutes.

Now fry your chicken, instructions for that are all over the internet, or you can bake your chicken.  If you go with the baked chicken option I would suggest taking about a cup of the mix and dipping the chicken in the sauce before placing it on your baking tray.  DO NOT USE the sauce you dipped your raw chicken in for anything else unless you are feeling really lucky.  The kind of luck found in a mexican border town when drinking tap water.  Get the idea?

Now for the ultimate frag.....once your master piece is done, get your best friend (or brother/wife/husband) to take the first bite and watch them explode.

Seriously though, it tastes great.  Enjoy.

I'll try making a new version in a couple weeks.  I have a great supply of ingredients here in California.

Cooking and Recipies / The Ambush! Lan Party Queso
« on: September 28, 2009, 04:00:13 PM »
This is an old favorite for Lan parties we hosted for so many years.  In many ways it was one of the highlights of our parties.  Well, that and my singing while fragging away.

Hardware:

Large crockpot
Large Skillet
Spatula
Large Ladel
Strainer

Ingredients:

1 lbs lean Hamburger  (substitue with any ground meat you like)
1 12 to 16 oz jar of medium Salsa  (we used Tostitos brand)
1 gallon for cheddar cheese sauce (found in the piggy section of Walmart's)
1 10 to 12 oz jar of Jalapenos
2 large bags of chips  (Tostitos band is great but generic works just as well)

Cooking:

Brown the ground meat and drain off the fat.  Extra fat is not good in the final product.
Drain the Jalapenos (don't use the juice because it's bitter) and finely chop all the peppers making sure to remove any stems.
In the crockpot combine all the ingredients, except the corn chips, and stir well once every 30 minutes for 2 hours or until the mix is hot.

Serve it on anything you like along with a large portion of your favorite corn chips and enjoy.

All credit for this recipe goes to Zwarrior and Zeet.

Whatever / RIAA destroys yet another person

You know, seeing how the RIAA is not just protecting it's members but actively trying to destroy people's lives, I will no longer buy any music from any artist under any record label.  Neither will I illegally obtain said music.  If it's not on the radio or TV where they make next to nothing then I really don't care for it.  I want to see all these greedy bastards bankrupt and living on the streets.

Whatever / Get well soon ZWarrior
« on: April 28, 2009, 12:35:25 PM »
As many of you know, our long time friend and mentor, ZWarrior, is on his death bed.  As I was talking to him yesterday I could hear in his voice the complete lack of energy and poor state of health that was taking a toll on him.  He had to stop and take a rest on the couch for an extended period before he could continue.  He is really that bad off.

You can send him get well cards or make cash donations to me for the ZWarrior memorial fund, as I am certain we will soon be spending it on a wake.

Looks like the Hog Flu has claimed it's first victim in Nebraska.......

Software / ftp command string
« on: December 02, 2008, 12:51:18 PM »
Assuming I have a .netrc file in place can I add a command, in variable form, in this string?

ftp -v -d servername 4021 (`$command`) $filename

I know I've formatted this before and had it work internal to a script but cann't remember how I did it.

Maybe something like;

foreach filename (`cat file`)
     ftp -v -d servername 4021 (`$command`) $filename
end

where the command variable list is set out in another flat file.

Anyone have an opinion?

NASA chose SGI to supply its next major supercomputer, a 20,480-core, 20TB SGI® Altix® ICE system, after a competitive evaluation the space agency launched last year.
