« on: August 17, 2009, 09:43:57 PM »
I was just parked in the Upper Belt doing a bit of XP grinding, not even looking at the names of the poor souls I was sending to the SY and suddenly it happened...

Security / Fake ATM found in Vegas...
« on: August 03, 2009, 12:29:54 PM »
Doesn't sound all that surprising does it?

What I didn't mention was that it had been planted in the Riviera Hotel and Casino, site of the annual DefCon security conference.  Guess what happened?  Yep the hackers found it real quick.

Go here for the details.

This is a real issue that you need to be on guard for even here in our town.  Try to use only ATMs from your bank that are in a permanent install, not this free standing units in the gas stations and convenience stores.

Hardware / M2 - mobile mount
« on: June 22, 2009, 04:17:05 PM »
As a frequent user of a GPS and other devices in the vehicle, I was looking for something to allow me to mount my Zune or GPS on the dash without damaging the dash or the device.

Then I stumbled upon the M2 - Mobile Mount from SoundGate.  I haven't bought it, but it does look like it might just do the trick.

http://www.soundgate.com/index.php?request=product.details&categoryid=270&productid=658&usereferrer=1&

DannyC, if you happen to see this, perhap you should get one for the chaser and if it works, hammer a deal with them to promote for them and have several in the car for your various devices.

Just a thought...

Star Pirates / Sad news that is a bit dated
« on: May 27, 2009, 06:23:06 PM »
For those of you that were playing Star Pirates, I just found out some sad news.  Back in March the player known as
Geoffrey De Lysander or GDL passed away.  He was overseeing one of his construction sites and an accident occured.  I have linked the thread in SP for you to get more info if you wish.

« on: May 18, 2009, 11:16:34 PM »
It's official...

Opie is leaving Omaha.

But not without a party.

For those of you that wish to bid him a fond farewell [or just make sure he's really leaving] we will be meeting at Dave & Busters at 7pm [gotta give him time to get his drunk on] Thursday night (5/21/09)

Pass the word since so few read these forums anyway.

Software / MultiMonitor Taskbar
« on: May 15, 2009, 11:05:14 PM »
I promised wolvy I would email him this URL, but since the laptop is packed for work tomorrow and the app is on the gaming system but his email addy isn't you ALL get the blessing of this cool tool:

http://www.mediachance.com/free/multimon.htm

It adds a taskbar on your other monitors besides your main.  This way any app on the additional monitor is shown on it's own monitor instead of the main monitor only.  Plus it puts a button on the application window that lets you send the app to other monitors on your system.

VERY Cool.  Been using it for several years and didn't realize I had not posted it before.  I apologize.  Don't beat me.  That means you, Opie, put the hammer down and step away from the toolbox.

Whatever / Rules for the Non-Military
« on: May 11, 2009, 11:21:04 AM »
[I know there are a few choice words in here, but I left them because they are appropriate for the text. - ZW]

**Dear Civilians, We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation has many civilians up in arms and excited to join the military. For those of you who can't join, you can still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas where we would like your assistance: **

1. The next time you see any adults talking (or wearing a hat) during the playing of the National Anthem - kick their ass.

2. When you witness, firsthand, someone burning the American Flag in protest - kick their ass.

3. Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise,
quietly pull them aside and explain how these veterans fought for the very freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices these veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a disabled veteran kicks their ass.

4. (GUYS) If you were never in the military, DO NOT pretend that you were. Wearing battle dress uniforms (BDUs) or Jungle Fatigues, telling
others that you used to be 'Special Forces'. Collecting GI Joe memorabilia, might have been okay when you were seven years old, now, it will only make you look stupid and get your ass kicked.

5. Next time you come across an *Air Force* member, do not ask them, 'Do you fly a jet? ' Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot.
Such ignorance deserves an ass-kicking (children are exempt).

6.If you witness someone calling the *US Coast Guard* 'non-military', inform them of their mistake - and kick their ass.

7. Next time Old Glory (the US flag) passes by during a parade, get on your damn feet and pay homage to her by placing your hand over your heart.
Quietly thank the military member or veteran lucky enough to be carrying her - of course, failure to do either of those could earn you a severe ass-kicking.

8. Don't try to discuss politics with a military member or veteran. We are Americans, and we all bleed the same, regardless of our party affiliation. Our Chain of Command includes our Commander-In-Chief (CinC). The President (for those who didn't know) is our CinC Regardless of political party. We have no inside track on what happens inside those big important buildings where all those representatives meet. All we know is that when those civilian representatives screw up the situation, they call upon the military to go straighten it out. If you keep asking us the same stupid questions repeatedly, you will get your ass kicked.

9. ' Your mama wears combat boots ' never made sense to me - stop saying it! If she did, she would most likely be a vet and therefore would kick your ass!

10. Bin Laden and the Taliban are not Communists, so stop saying 'Let's go kill those Commies!', and stop asking us where he is! Crystal balls are not standard issue in the military. That reminds me - if you see anyone calling those damn psychic phone numbers, let me know, so I can go kick their ass!

11. 'Flyboy' (*Air Force*); 'Jarhead' (*Marines*); 'Grunt' (*Army*); 'Squid' (*Navy*); 'Puddle Jumpers' (*Coast Guard*); etc., are terms of endearment we use describing each other.  Unless you are a service member or vet, you have not earned the right to use them. Using them could get your ass kicked.

12. Last, but not least, whether or not you become a member of the military, support our troops and their families. Every Thanksgiving and religious holiday that you enjoy with family and friends, please remember that there are literally thousands of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen far from home wishing; they could be with their families.. Thank God for our military and the sacrifices they make every day. Without them, our Country would get it's ass kicked.

* AND ONE MORE::

13. If you ever see anyone either standing for or singing the national anthem in Spanish - KICK THEIR ASS.

* It's the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press.

* It's the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.

* It's the Veteran, not the community organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.

* It's the Military who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Hardware / The G15 is growing up!
« on: April 03, 2009, 06:26:24 PM »
Logitech took away the LCD from the G15 and that hacked me off.  But after seeing what's next, I forgive them...

Enter the Logitech G19...

Quote
    *  Tiltable, color GamePanel™ LCD: The (320x240) display shows unprecedented levels of information—both in- and out-of-game—including game stats, system information, VOIP communication data, video playback, image slideshows, and many other items.
    * User-selectable backlit characters: Personalize the keyboard to better fit with the rest of your computer and gaming equipment, and easily locate keys—even in the dark.
    * Twelve fully programmable G-keys with three macros per key: Program up to 36 single keypresses or complex macros; use the MR key to record new macros on-the-fly.
    * Multi-key input: Use up to five keys at once to perform multiple complex actions.
    * Game/desktop mode: Disable the Windows/Context Menu keys so they won’t interrupt your game if pressed accidentally.

You catch that first item?  a COLOR LCD!!!

I am liking this so much!

Hardware / Case for Sale...
« on: January 28, 2009, 11:10:13 PM »
I realize that only 3 or 4 people are reading the forums, but you have the potential for a great deal here.

I am upgrading my case because of heat issues with my video card.  It's too freaking big for the case and is making everything HOT.

Because of the upgrade I will very shortly have my old case available for purchase at an outrageous price.  You can be the proud owner of a slightly used Thermaltake Tsunami Dream VA3000

The price at purchase 2 years ago was $130, and is still listed at that price.  I am letting it go for $40 to get it out of my basement after I upgrade.

Let me know if you are interested.  The plan is to transfer the system this weekend.

Hardware / Older hardware eats RAM!
« on: January 28, 2009, 11:00:39 PM »
Boom and IO were having a discussion not too long ago and he insisted that your video cards took some of your system RAM, and I was arguing it didn't .  I had never seen this and thus felt I was right.

Then I upgraded my system, with an ASUS A8N32-SL Deluxe mobo, from 2GB RAM to 4GB RAM.

The system said, at POST, I had only 2816MB RAM available (4096MB installed)

a quick search of the ASUS site turns up the following:

Quote
If you installed total 4GB memory, the system will detect less than 4GB of total memory because of address space allocation for other critical functions, such as:

- System BIOS (including motherboard, add-on cards, etc..)
- Motherboards resources
- Memory mapped I/O
- configuration for AGP/PCI-Ex/PCI
- Other memory allocations for PCI devices

Different onboard devices and different add-on cards (devices) will result of different total memory size.
e.g. more PCI cards installed will require more memory resources, resulting of less memory free for other uses.

On a SLI system, since PCI-Ex graphic cards will occupy around 256MB, another 256MB will be occupied after you install a 2nd PCI-Ex graphic card. Hence, 2.75GB memory left only if two SLI cards installed on A8N-SLI Premium while 3.0GB memory left with one graphic card without other add-on devices.

This limitation applies to most chipsets & Microsoft Windows 32-bit version operating systems.

If you install Windows 32-bit version operating system, we recommend that you install less than 3GB of total memory. If more than 3GB memory is required for your system, then below two conditions must be met:
1. The memory controller which supports memory swap functionality is used. Chipsets later than Intel 975X, 955X, Nvidia NF4 SLI Intel Edition, Nvidia NF4 SLI X16, and AMD K8 CPU architecture support memory swap function.
2. Windows 64-bit OS which can address more than 4GB memory.

You can check below URLs for reference:
http://dlsvr.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/4GB_Rev1.pdf
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/cs-016594.htm

 :swear:

I publicly apologize Boom, you were right.  I have never in my life seen this on any system I have worked with until now.

I feel cheated and ripped off now.  Supposedly the newer mobos don't have this issue.

Hardware / My new drive
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:04:41 PM »
I may or may not have mentioned that last spring I picked up a D-Link DNS321 to store my data on the network since there is no room on my file server any longer.

The first drive into it was the 500GB Western Digital I had sitting around on my desk for several months.  This was nice and it meant that I could store my digital media and other files there without worrying about server access.

Last week I had a critical failure of my Western Digital 500GB Passport drive (I kinda dropped it and separated the USB jack from the breadboard) and had to get a new case for drive in it.  While getting that I found the Deal of the Day...

Seagate ST31500341AS for $129.

That would be .086 per GB for a 1.5 TERABYTE drive!!!

This brings my NAS to a total of 2TB of storage!!  This is as much storage as Gateway Computers had in their data center in 1998.  I swear I never thought I would see the day that there would be that much storage in a home.

The drives are now at their regular price again of $179.

At this point I am not planning on being back in KC until the new year, but if anybody wants some shopping done the MicroCenter is halfway between my hotel and my client.

Just don't tell my wife... she grounded me from there.

:D

Software / Disable the User Access Control in Vista
« on: November 28, 2008, 02:57:13 PM »
Anyone who has Vista is fully aware of the most annoying part of the OS...  the freaking UAC popups anytime you want to run something or make a change of any type.

I found a site with the fast and simple way to disable it:

Very worth doing it.

Whatever / Our little Snauz is getting older!
« on: November 10, 2008, 08:25:01 AM »
OK, in a very short time, January, our favorite game monkey will be reaching the legal age to pickup drinks and consume them.

I say we help him do this with some flair and style.

I was thinking that we rent a vehicle instead of making the last "minor" drive.  He rides with us and relaxes instead of trying to pour drunken gamers into a vehicle.  I come with an auto-pour function so he only has to worry about the rest of you lot.

Also, he gets to pick the locations to visit.

Thoughts?

Congratulations to Mr. Anderson!

It's a week late in posting, but our own favorite rocket ho' just graduated from college with a real degree.  It was Halloween, and he was getting a sheepskin for all the work.

Drop him a PM or post here.  It was a lot of hard work and he should be proud.  I know I am.
