Hardware / Calculate needed PSU size
« on: December 29, 2010, 10:01:42 AM »
I was poking around on the ASUS support site and found this very handy tool

Recommended Power Supply Wattage Calculator

Using my workstation, not the laptop of course, it said I should have 950W.  That seems pretty accurate since I had to put an 1100W in there when I built it.

Software / Editing the boot manager in Vista\Win7
« on: October 09, 2010, 09:59:59 PM »
So for those of you who remember the old days where you could just fire up a text editor and modify the boot.ini file when there was a problem or a change to the boot process for your PC, I give you the new way.

The is no longer a simple text file to edit and you are on your way.  Now you have to know the BCDEdit command.  This is a command run at the CMD window, and it somewhat cryptic to decipher.  I found a nice link to a article talking about how to change a few of the settings, including the timeout when you have multiple OSes installed. (http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/utilities/bcdedit-basics.aspx)

And here is the link to the official documentation on the command on the Microsoft site:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721886%28WS.10%29.aspx

Be careful and have fun!

« on: September 24, 2010, 07:38:23 AM »
Just in case you guys need to move your Vent to another computer or reinstall Ventrilo, here is how to keep those servers you have listed already.

Open a windows explorer and goto C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Ventrilo\ and copy the ventrilo.ini.  Paste that in the same location on the new computer and viola you have your settings copied!

On Windows Vista and above goto to C:\Users\<login name>\AppData\Roaming\Ventrilo\

Security / Your privacy is shrinking

So, according to a Federal Court of Appeals, your vehicle in your driveway is NOT on private property.  This means that the feds can attach a GPS tracker to your vehicle and track your movements WITHOUT a warrant.

Guess I have a big reason to empty out the garage and park the ambush-mobile in the there.  Not that I have any reason to suspect big brother would track me.

Whatever / Me and Bawls...
« on: August 16, 2010, 04:34:49 PM »
I read this comic  from Real Life and I have to admit something...

I don't drink it anymore.

I am the guy with the Bawls sticker on the back window of my truck, and the empty cases next to the gaming fridge in the basement.  I have a picture of Opie and I with a PALLET of Bawls we were bringing in for an Ambush! LAN party.

But I just don't drink it anymore.  They priced themselves out of my life.  I won't spend that much money for a softdrink.  RedBull is not a softdrink, and I do pay a premium for it, but I can't drink Bawls like I can the RedBull.

I do mourn that loss some days, but then I think of that as the past.   :tired:

G'Bye Bawls, may you find a home somewhere.

Here is a picture to remind us all of once was...

Gaming / How Playing Video Games Can Boost Your Career
« on: July 22, 2010, 09:49:25 PM »
In case you wanted an excuse for listing your WoW time as a benefit on your resume we have new evidence that you should.  Check out this new article on Yahoo Hot Jobs.

Elliot Noss, chief executive of domain-name provider Tucows, has spent the past five years training to become a better leader. How? By playing World of Warcraft for six to seven hours a week.

"You have these events [in World of Warcraft] that are very leadership-driven," Noss says. "For example, when you're in a raid that's poorly led, it's really easy to see how valuable are skills like managing the social dynamic, making sure there was the right level of preparation, and making sure that there was a clear hierarchy in terms of who is performing what roles."

The rest talks about how working in instances and other quests is teaching you skills to use in the real world.

Software / Adobe Flash Update
« on: June 29, 2010, 08:13:02 AM »
There have been some serious security issues found with the previous versions of Flash from Adobe and it is highly recommended that you upgrade to the latest version of Flash.

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

However when you go to the page to get the latest version you are also forced to install their Download Manager application/plug-in which will take over your download operations if you are using Firefox.  You are also given the option of installing the McAfee Security Plus Scan tool, although you may not notice that it is checked and will install it by default since the BIG yellow button marked Agree and Install will draw your attention first.

When you click that yellow button you are not only agreeing to install the Flash player you are agreeing to install their Download Player.

If you are anything like me you don't appreciate having to use thier app to do what you can do just fine already.  With a poking around I found the support page and  at the bottom is exactly what I was looking for, the install file WITHOUT any additional unwanted baggage.

Whatever / Charity for the spring of 2010
« on: February 09, 2010, 08:36:00 AM »
greetings guys!

I know we really don't do much these days, but I thought maybe we could think about doing something for charity if nothing else.  Post your suggestions for charities, and we can see about some kind of fund raiser.

My first recommendation is Honor Flight (http://heartlandhonorflight.com).  A worthy cause to send WW2 vets to DC to see the memorial there that most are too old to get to on their own.  I see it as a great tie-in to our favourite old school FPS Call of Duty.

what are your thoughts?

Hardware / Time for a new router, again.
« on: December 01, 2009, 09:32:48 AM »
I am having problems with my router at home with issues where it slowly squeezes the life out of my Internet connection or just flat out cuts access to the web.  the only solution is to reboot the unit.

Now that the Mrs. is very active on the web all the time I can't have this because it disrupts the peace and quiet of the house when she can't get out.
Here are the two routers I am looking to replace my current unit:

Open Box: D-Link DGL-4500 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11a/b/g, IEEE802.11n Draft Xtreme N Gaming Router

Could you let me know what your thoughts are on these?

Hot Deals / Selling my N52te...
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:13:13 PM »
Greets one and all!
I am selling my Nostromo n52te for $50.

It has about 15 minutes of use on it and I really don't want it.  I am still using the original n52, and will for the foreseeable future, but since I can't find the receipt I am selling it off.  I am saving up for a new phone and thought this would be a good way to do it, and somebody gets to save money as well.

BestBuy wants $80+tax, I want $50 flat you figure out which is the better deal.

Star Pirates / Ambush Fleet is being delisted
« on: September 09, 2009, 09:01:58 PM »
Recently Star Pirates implemented a new process to handle the inactive players out there.  After a certain amount of time accounts who have not logged in will be listed as inactive and removed from any fleet of which they are a member.  If a fleet falls below 10 members due to this the fleet will be removed from the ladder.

Guess which fleet is down to 5 players now, and if a certain Anderson doesn't login soon it will be 4 members.

just thought I would let you know.
