Ingress / Other Tools to use with Ingress
« on: February 18, 2015, 02:23:00 PM »
This will be a thread about the various apps we use with Ingress to coordinate and improve our gameplay.  Feel free to post about your favorite tool, but only if it does not violate the ToS for Ingress. Items like the Ingress Glyph Hacker would not be appropriate since we don't condone cheating.

Ingress / Ingressing the Ambush Crew
« on: January 22, 2015, 10:34:35 AM »
So as noted earlier we are working on getting the band back together. It sounds like we have Zeet on lead vocals, I'm on backing vocals and rhythm guitar, Jolly playing bass, Snauz on Rhythm guitar.  We need a drummer, keyboard and percussion.
Vector is on-board from Montana but it's hard for him to make the gigs from there.  He will guest star with the band periodically if he is in town, however.

For those who are in the Omaha area, I would highly suggest you join the Omaha Resistance Google+ community (it is a private community to protect the communications)

Jolly, I need you to contact me so that I can get you added to HangOuts and have your phone number.  Easiest is to find my on Google+ 9 W. Andy Roche) and ping me there.

Mr. Anderson, are you playing?

Ingress / Ingress: An Overview
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:42:34 AM »
This is a mobile game that requires you get out of your chair and into the *gasp* real world.

It is published by Niantic Labs (which is a division of Google) and involves taking control of portals found around the world.  The portal is located on a publicly accessible location such sculptures, paintings, historical locations and other locations of import.

There are 2 factions in the game, Enlightened and Resistance, who compete for control of those portals.  Capturing a portal is done by either locating a neutral portal and placing resonators to power the portal for your faction or by locating a portal controlled by the opposing faction and using offensive weapons (XMP Bursters and Ultra Strikes) to destroy any defenses and resonators on the portal which then turns the portal neutral. After you control a portal you can link it with other portals controlled by your faction to create Control Fields and score point for the faction.

This is a world wide game that is played locally.  Be aware that this bad boy uses high-res graphics and GPS so your battery is toast when playing.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nianticproject.ingress
iPhone: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ingress/id576505181?mt=8

Currently actively playing:
Zeet (Zeet959)
ZWarrior (Malikont)

Note: We are playing Resistance and if anyone chooses to join the fight to protect the city from the influences of the Shapers (via the Enlightened frogs) let me know and I can help you get leveled.  I believe Zeet will eventually be in here as well and he is higher level than I am at this point.

There is a lot to the game and I suggest you start by going through the training to learn the very basic parts of the game and then contacting someone who is playing for your faction to learn the ins and outs of the game and how to level quicker.

For those of you playing Ingress today is the first FS of the year.  A chance to freeze your royal Rastafarian nay-nays off while trying to put it over on the opposing faction.
Maybe I will see you there?

Meetups / How about Beer Fest?
« on: June 01, 2013, 09:47:24 AM »
Been a LONG while since we all got together and I think I found the perfect event.

http://www.omahabeerfest.com/

It also happens that a certain OpieSilver will be in town that weekend so maybe we can convince him to show his face and regale us with stories and wisdom as well.

Tickets are $30 person but, having been previously, I can assure you that it is very worth it.

Who's in?

Software / It's alive!
« on: April 26, 2012, 08:53:56 PM »
OK, I am getting ready for the next Netwar and needed to get some info for my install of UT on the laptop.

This led me to the old website (The UnReal Admin) that I used visit for Admin tools and the such  and son-of-a-gun if my login, which hasn't seen action in over 5 years, is STILL LIVE!!

This is the site that I was very active long ago with helping would be UT admins get their systems running and answering questions about how the servers work.  It seems that there is still a very active player base out there and there are plenty of people running servers as well.

Gotta love UT.   :bouncy:

MineCraft / Running a MineCraft Server
« on: April 10, 2012, 09:25:41 PM »
1) create a folder. We'll call it C:\Minecraft
2) download minecraft_server.jar from Minecraft.net to the folder you created.
3) create a text file in that folder. Call it start_server.bat
4) open the text file and put the following code in the file.

Quote
@echo off
java -Xmx3072M -Xms3072M -jar minecraft_server.jar

5) save the file
6) create new file called server.properties and edit in notepad.

Whatever / Vader has left the Empire.

Last week the Lord of the Sith officially announced that he was no longer going to be affiliated with the infamous Empire.

Citing a difference of opinion regarding the direction the Empire is heading, the dark cloaked one is heading off to pursue new opportunities.

Software / Locations of Java 32b v 64b
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:04:41 AM »
So I have been trying to figure out  how to know what versions of Java are installed on my computer and how to get the appropriate Java Control Panel for either the 64bit or 32bit version when both are loaded on your computer.  This is a hassle since the JCP that is loaded from the Windows Control Panel is the 32b version.

However, if you want to manage the 64b version using the JCP you have to either wait for an update, if you have the auto-update turned option active, or start an app that is using the 64b version.

Well, I have cracked the code.  It's actually so simple it's ridiculous.  32b java is installed in 'Program Files\java"  and 64b java is installed in 'Program Files (x86)\java".  The CPL (javacpl.exe) is located in the bin directory below that location.

Software / Windows Product Activation Hotline

For those times that Windows won't activate, and you ARE running a legal copy of Windows, you can call M$ to get the activation code.

M$ will not give you the phone number or a link to the phone number in Windows, but you can go to this page to get the phone number:

I do have a server up and running.  I know a few of you have been on the server and are having fun.  if you son't have the server address send me a text for the address as I really don't want a bunch of strangers taking over our server.

Invite people you trust, but let's keep it in the family since it is on my gaming workstation.

Here is a link to a map of the world.  This is current as of 11/30/11

An easy ride, over carpeted ground
Mini turbine head, gets the pet hair out
We are the dirty ones, on our filthy floors
For a whole lifetime – how long the filter’s good for
I clean for you

I got some crumbs and chunks of mud
Whoa-oh
Dander, pet hair, assorted crud
Whoa-oh
And I want
Airmuscle
Technology
Animal
And I want
Root Cyclone
‘Cause it sucks
Animal

My pet wolf, sheds all over the house
Pees with excitement when it sees a mouse
I’m suckin’ with the wind, that Root Cyclone
The particles get snared in the filter unawares
I never sneeze

I got some crumbs and chunks of mud
Whoa-oh
Dander, pet hair, assorted crud
Whoa-oh
And I want

And I want

‘Cause it sucks

What happens when you text in a movie, get kicked out, and leave a stupid VM with the theater?

Security / Windows 7 phones home... on your dime
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:14:31 AM »
I have always noticed that Windows 7 knows when I have network connectivity and suspected the the OS was connecting to something on the web, but didn't know what it was doing to validate the connectivity.  Now I have the details:

http://blog.superuser.com/2011/05/16/windows-7-network-awareness/

Quote
Windows does indeed check a Microsoft site for connectivity, using the Network Connectivity Status Indicator site. There are a few variations of the connection checking process:

   1. NCSI performs a DNS lookup on http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt, then requests http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt. This file is a plain-text file and contains only the text Microsoft NCSI.
   2. NCSI sends a DNS lookup request for dns.msftncsi.com. This DNS address should resolve to 131.107.255.255. If the address does not match, then it is assumed that the internet connection is not functioning correctly.

I am sufficiently private, and suspicious of M$, that I am willing to modify these settings and setup the process on one of my websites.  I will tell you how it works after I have tested it for a while.

Update:  Below are the settings that can be changed and the meaning of the entries.

Quote
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet]
"EnableActiveProbing"=dword:00000001 -- Turn this to "0" to disable the testing
"ActiveWebProbeHost"="www.msftncsi.com" -- The domain to find the test file
"ActiveWebProbePath"="ncsi.txt" -- The name of the test file
"ActiveWebProbeContent"="Microsoft NCSI" -- The expected text in the test file (remember to not have an EOL)
"ActiveDnsProbeHost"="dns.msftncsi.com" -- The dns server to poll
"ActiveDnsProbeContent"="131.107.255.255" -- The IP address for the dns server to poll

Gaming / How much is too much?
« on: January 27, 2011, 01:55:36 PM »
In an interview posted on Discover Magazine's website today (1-27-11)  there is an interesting notation regarding studies on how much gaming is too much.

Quote
There was a really significant study that tracked 1,100 soldiers for a year, and looked at how they were spending their free time with things they considered coping mechanisms—using Facebook, listening to music, reading, working out, or playing video games. They correlated this with incidences of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, suicide attempts, and domestic violence. The found that by a very wide margin, the most psychologically protected individuals—who had the lowest rates of any of these negative experiences—were people who were playing video games 3 to 4 hours a day. The benefit started at an hour a day, and it got better and better on this perfect U-curve up to 3 to 4 hours a day. And then if you started to play more than 4 hours a day, it got steeply less beneficial until it was actually harmful to play a lot of video games. That was fascinating—it was more beneficial than anything but working out 7 hours a day...

Very cool interview, and this segment alone is worth the read of the rest.  You will have to read the article to get the rest of that quote.

Quote
There’s really interesting research that came out this year looking at the rise in diabetes and the influence of diabetes on aggression and violence and crime. It turns out that there’s an extraordinary correlation between rising diabetes rates and all kinds of violent crime, and the tendency to wage war—even when you control for poverty and other social aspects.

So there’s new, interesting thinking that the best way to create world peace would be to reduce the diabetes trend, which is tied to the obesity trend, which is our number one health concern in the U.S. There is this huge space of games that are being created for physical activity, and games have also historically had quite a lot of content around war—World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Call of Duty. But this idea that we could use games to reduce obesity, stop diabetes, and that that would lead to world peace, I think is really fascinating.

Maybe gamers can change the world?
