Whatever / hard drive upgrade.
« on: July 18, 2003, 11:27:02 PM »
I want to upgrade my hard drive now and wonder which is the best to get. I want to stay around $100.

Some things that the drive must have at a minimum...

1. ata100
2. 8mb cache
3. 7200 rpm
4. 100gb storage
4. No ibm drives

I was looking at the WD1200JB from western digital. It fits everything listed but I wonder if their is a better choice. If I can't find a better drive I am thinking of going scsi. I have 2 servers :buttrock: running scsi and both are fast given the age of the drives (can only imagin a new setup).

Ok I got my new cpu. It's an athlon xp 2600+ 333mhz fsb. For now I want to run it on a 266mhz fsb do to my slow ram(pc2100). will this cpu run on a 266mhz fsb just fine? I do plan on pushing the multiplier up to get it near 2.08ghz(my board unlocks the processor).

ok I ended up going with the Abit NF7-S motherboard.(http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3422084441&category=42010#BID1) I really wanted the asus but this board is only slightly slower and costs $40 less(which I can use tward a better cpu or more ram). For now I'm sticking with the same processor (1700+) and ram (pc2100).

I plan on getting an athlon xp 2600 with my next paycheck. Problem with that is I assume I can't use my pc2100 ram with that cpu so I'll have to wait another 2 weeks for my next check to get ram(which I plan on getting a gig worth as even with 512mb I hit the swapfile to much in bf1942).

Can't wait for the next lanparty! No more slow framerates!

ok I got my new video card and things seem to run much better. I ended up getting a real nice card. It's a MSI G4Ti4600. It has 128mb ddr ram and a good heatsink. sadly even with this new card my 3dmark score only went up 300 points(to 96??) without overclocking.

As for ram I have one stick of 256mb (not sure if it's pc2100 or better) and 2 sticks of 128mb pc2100 ram. Because of current prices I can sell my ram and get 2 sticks of 256mb pc 3500 ram cheap.

it's an ibm. I plan on junking the drive before it dies as ALL ibm drives I have ever had have all died early. I am really looking hard at Samsung drives. They have had problems in the past but get high marks today. But as I said that can't be the problem as loading is fast. (that and drive speed rarely affects framerate)

As for the video card I am waiting for the 9700pro to get to $200. Until then I'll stick with nvidia cards. (tradeing my 4200 for a 4600 plus $50. so I have $150 for the motherboard).

I did post information on my hard drive (30gb ata100 7200rpm drive ) I know thats not the bottleneck as loading is fast, its while playing thing slow down (ata 133 is no faster than ata100 in most tests so I see no reason to waste money on a ata133 drive).

I already have 512mb of ram so I don't need more ram(as I have never used 100% of my ram).

I do plan on getting a new board at some point. right now the Asus A7N8XDeluxe looks to be what I will get.

ok I have a spare $200 for my computer and want to know were would be the best place to put it. I have noticed in bf1942 I get low framerates sometimes so now is the time to do something.

My system as it stands now

Abit kg7 board(old(1998/99) but rock solid)
athlon XP 1700+
512mb pc 2100 ram (all brand name)
gainward geforce 4 ti 4200 64mb
sb live 5.1
10/100 3com nic
30gb ata100 7200rpm drive (plenty of room for me)

Anything here a real bottleneck? I was thinking of getting a ti4600/128mb card (So I can really kick some butt in the next lanparty).

BTW
I did get this system to do over 10000 3d marks in 3dmark 2001 by overclocking the bus to 145mhz.

Ok the game still keeps locking up but I plan on re-installing everything(even windows) to see if that fixes the problem.

The system as it will be the day of the lanparty

*Abit KG7 motherboard(flashed to 2003 bios)
*Athlon XP 1700+
*512mb pc2100 ram
*IBM 7200rpm 30gb hdd
*Gainward geforce 4 ti 4200 64mb (faster than the 128mb version)
*Sound blaster live 5.1
*3com 10/100 pci nic
*4X rd-rw
*Nokia 17" trinitron monitor
*Windows XP pro

I figure this upgrade has cost me about $700. Not bad for the system I have now. I just wish it would quit locking up in bf1942!

BTW
I have no problems in ut and ut2k3.

As far as I can tell no single event causes this problem. It only happens once a week or less but with my luck it will happen at the lan party :;(:.

I do plan on buying the full version and hope that fixes my problems.

Also how do I get bf1942 and ut2k3 to display my framerate? I want to see just how much better my new system is.

While running the demo version of bf1942 the game will just quit and return you to the desktop. Has anyone else had this problem and will the full version do the same?

BTW
I am running windows XP pro and 384mb ram.

I set the level second from the last(whatever that is called). I must admit to some spawn sniping but this was a practice match.

Sounds good. Now prices will drop on the 9700 pro! Perhaps in time for the lanparty.

Speaking of ati's branching out it would be great for them to produce a chipset based off the 9000 line for pdas. Then I could play unreal tournament or carmageddon2 anywhere I go :D.

well the NF7S gives you more room around the cpu so you can cool your processor but abit chose to put the ram to close the the agp slot so you WILL have problems adding ram without removing the videocard first.

I think I would go with the "Asus A7N8X deluxe" It looks to be a better board if you have a small cpu cooler.

looks like I made a good choice with buying a geforce4 ti4200 card. Its only slightly less powerfull than the 9700. The max I can play any game at is 1024X768 which most of the high end cards seem to be about even on.

I will look into a nforce2 board soon as I am selling a lot of my old computers and will have the money :D (perhaps now is the time to get a board with ide raid).

Hardware / upgradeing my computer.
« on: February 16, 2003, 07:30:04 PM »
ok I made the jump. I went with a whole new system. What sold me was it has a geforce4 ti4200. It's also has an athlon 1700+ overclocked to 2000+(1.65ghz) and runs rock solid according to the seller. I do plan on getting my hands on a 2100+ and getting a ati 9700 pro but this will hold me until I can get that.

sadly most systems on ebay seem to only have a geforce 4 mx 440 which is only slightly better than what I currently have. several others had integrated graphics which my geforce2mx could beat. I got lucky to find this system! Now I need a new case for it :D (don't like beige).

Thanks for the tips. if I can save up some more money I will upgrade the motherboard.

I was originally thinking I could reuse my orb heatsink but even with a athlon t-bird 1gn it gets hot. As for memory I have all I need for the moment at 384mb of ddr ram.

On the videocard I all out refuse to go nvidia. I want an ati. I may be force to step back to another ati card or wait until ati releases their next card and the 9700pro drops sharply.

I do plan on buying a NICE silver case with a cold cathode tube. Really want an UV tube and some uv paint. Everything depends on my budget though.

can't wait to see what everyone else has upgraded to.:D

hope to have my new system finished before then.  hopefully prices on the 9700pro will drop and allow me to get a better motherboard(although I still like my abit kg7. nice solid board).

BTW
anyone here play UT on linux? is it any good?

Thanks I found a few posts helpful. I have no plans on upgradeing my motherboard as I'm happy with the KG7 I have. I can use any amd processor that supports a 266mhz bus. I decided on the 2100+ as the 2200+ costs much more for only a slight speed improvement.

I am tired of my slow 1gh computer. I want to upgrade and wonder what everyone thinks of my choices.

Original config.

Abit KG7 motherboard
amd thunderbird 1gh
128mb ddr ram
geforce 2 mx400
intel 10/100 pci card
2 ibm 6.4 gig ata/66 drives
4x4x24 cd-rw

soon to be specs

Abit KG7 motherboard
amd Athlon xp 2100+
384mb ddr ram
ati 9700 pro
intel 10/100 pci card
1 30gig ibm ata/100 drive
40x?x40 cd-rw

I will be getting a new case as well(brushed metal look). I just hope my 300w powersupply will work with the new processor and video card.

I do have one question. what is the best hard drive for fast access and is still low in price (around $100. must be 7200 rpm and ata/100.).

Anyone know what the ut2003 demo requires? I am running an athlon 1gh system with a geforce2 MX400 with 64mb ram and 128mb system ram.

Thanks!
