Title: DD-WRT
Post by: JollyRoger on July 21, 2009, 05:19:14 PM
DD-WRT has been around for many years now but, i have never had a router i could install it on until now. I convinced my roomate to allow me to install DD-WRT on to his Linksys WRT54GS v3.  Once installed I was blown away by what I could now do with my router.

DD-WRT is a linux based firmware for over 200 devices that basically turns your router in to a enterprise equivalent router.

It does it all, um well maybe not all but so darn close it should be all.

It has both a web based interface and a command line interface accessed either by telnet or ssh.
there is so much it can do  think at this point I will refer you to the website for more detail.

It truly is Bad ass.

Didn't we hear about this a while back?  I am still interested in it, but that means buying a new router.  I have the WRT54GS v5 and it is not flashable.  **GRRRRRR**

It is worth it if you want  to be able to configure your router past its factory abilities. i think your router supports up to the "standard" release which is 3.32 mb. That Give you all but two features.

Back up your current firmware and try it out.  One of the coolest features is not only the support of vlans. but virtual Wireless lans with AP isolation. It looks like I  have to access points and the router acts like there are two APs. on two separate networks. plus I have two extra vlans.

I did this just because I could, But I could turn the virtual AP in to a WiFi hotspot with a built in radius server and client authentication... heck I could even make people pay for my wireless access if i wanted. lol

With all these features I have at my finger tips I really can have too much fun. lol

seriously, tonight Z, you should get on to the DD-WRT website and start reading. I think you will like what you see.

Yeah, I need to verify what version I have.  I may have the "neutered" versions, so I would be limited in the software options.

Look for your router here, if it is in fact the WRT-54GS V5 you only have a 2mb flash memory, and can only use the micro version.

this link has version info.

hmm. Good news...you can upgrade. bad news... you can't get it all. Colon shift nine.
Now, you need to con peeps in to trading with you their router for yours.  Tade enough and you may just end up with a WRT-54GS v3...
Or other compatible router that lets you do it all. Then you don't have to spend any monies either.

I'm going to upgrade to "mega" this weekend.
only part that sucks about that is I have to redo my IPTables by hand.
I might install a usb port and MMC/SD memory this weekend too.

Tell me your thought when you get yous installed.
