When do you think your next upgrade will be and what do you think you will upgrade to? This isn't pie in the sky monster system price isn't a concern. This is realistic good system at good prices.
-
They havn't made it yet.
-
I am looking at a few things:
New processor, AMD for sure, speed as yet undetermined.
1GB PC2700 RAM faster if available
Asus A7V333
GeForce4 Ti4400 (or better if the price is right)
New burner (Plextor? (http://www.plextor.com/english/products/20_10.html))
New hard drive - Western Digital (http://westerndigital.com/products/Products.asp?DriveID=24)
New case?
-
Just Upgraded to:
Asus A7V333
512mb DDR PC2700
Already had:
Amd XP 1600+ w/ Volcano 7
Creative DVD
Yamaha 20x burner
*** with the Ram that was won at F3.. I will now be up at 1GIG of PC2700 DDR.. woohoo!

Anyone need a video card update:hubba:
ATI 8500 LE 128 meg @ compusa for $99
my 8500 64 pulled a 8300 on 3dmark 2001 with XP pro sp1
P3 1.266s @ 1.43
-
dad your card isnt a LE is it i thought it was a regular one...
-
I shall not be swayed by the DARK SIDE!!!!
Get thee behind me ATI!
-
Ya ZW your right, I wouldn't put an ATI card in a AMD system maybe an MX400
-
I should have said "Get thee behind me Intel, and your dark servant ATI!" ;)
-
Hay have you read about the issues the the MX card have with UT 2003? Oh sorry ZW you already know. :lol To bad you have to run in 16 bit. But for $99 you could be up there with the big boys. DX8.1b card to run a DX8.1b game like UT 2003. I'm only geten 80fps at defalt settings 1280 x 1024. with all on highest geten 35fps. nv 4400 is $200 for 30 fps faster. that's great if your monitor refreashes at 120 like mine. But I don't think 30 more frames is worth $100.
-
You will when I keep fraggin ya! LOL
-
30 fraims isint a big deal unless your at 25-30 for a high and your alraeady running all low detales... But... then that 100 more wouldent do you any good because you would need to upgrade yout prossesor not you Vid cvard.....
-
I have but one thing to say...
:swear:
-
Video Card is my next upgrade... just waiting for the prices to come down....:)
-
Waiting for the ddr II cards to come out
-
whats the DDR II ????
-
According to certain industry insiders, DDR-II on graphics cards is going to appear in early 2003 and work at the resulting speeds of about 1GHz. The GDDR-III will come later in 2003, probably in the fourth quarter or in the very end of the year, and will be able to function at clock-speeds of up to 1.5 – 1.6GHz. Although GDDR-III will evolve from DDR-II, it will have some pretty important differences, as stated by the sources. Firstly, GDDR-III will make use of a single-ended, unidirectional strobe that separates the reads and writes. DDR-II, by contrast, uses differential bi-directional strobes. Secondly, GDDR-III will utilise a "pseudo-open drain" interface technique that is based on voltage rather than current. This was done so that graphics chips can be compatible with DDR, DDR-II and GDDR-III. Like DDR-II, GDDR-III interface uses 1.8-Volt SSTL. Such memory is better suited to point-to-point links used on graphics cards and will allow the GPU developers to reach the new performance and feature heights with their products.
Apart from ATI Technologies and NVIDIA, GDDR-III is supported by leading memory manufacturers, including Micron, Hynix and Infineon. Well, it seems that the NV40 and R400 based graphics cards will be equipped with brand-new types of memory. Amazing how two fabless semiconductor companies can drive the industry.

Intel to launch 3Ghz+ CPU on Nov 14
Posted by overclocker at 10:11
Intel is slated to launch the 3GHz version of its Pentium 4 processor on Nov. 14, fulfilling promises made by company executives more than a year ago, according to solution providers informed about the release date.
The product launch likely will affect pricing throughout Intel's P4 lineup in the remaining six weeks of the fourth quarter, which covers the peak holiday selling season, said the solution providers, who wished to remain anonymous.
An Intel spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the Nov. 14 launch date but said the company still plans to release the 3GHz P4 chip this quarter.
-
Scary. For my degree, I had to do a report. Mine was on the history and future of the Intel processor. Everyone laughed when I quoted Intel and said they would have a 1GHz processor by 2000. That was there goal, and now 2.5 years later they are pushing 3GHz!

Hey I was doing my Homework and came across this web site THE COMPUTER HALL OF FAME (http://www.digidome.nl/prod01.htm)
-
Well, like Wolfy I have done an upgrade as well, not the kind of upgrade I was planning but it will hold me until the course of technology evolves again. Asus A7V333, 1800+, 512 PC2700, 80 GIG ATA133 Maxtor HD, 72x CDRom, DVD Drive, Plextor 32x-10x-40x Burner. I am still running my Gforce2-Ultra and plan to upgrade my video card next. I am still leaning towards the 4600 as I expect the prices to drop very soon. There are better cards out there but its doubtful I will spend $450.00 on a card again like I did with the Ultra. Its great to be at the latest hardware but it is also very costly and as fast as technology is changing, it makes senses to spend half the money and do twice as many upgrades. This allows me to upgrade the two kids computers as well as the hardware naturally falls down hill. I also plan to purchase Windows XP-Pro in the near future.
-
Wait till dec. and they will be giving the out dated card away should be able to pickup a 9700 for $200-250 dx9 is the way to go
-
ATI 9700 is only $57 more new card are out in nov. the fastest card in the world should go down from $307 free ship at p/w.
-
Well Morph I benchmarked my Ram And Here is what I got (there is 256 Meg)
-
wups looks like my mouse got in there
Anyway I told you i have more than 100Mhz RAM my ram isnt that slow
-
Yeah, but it isn't PC2700!
-
Take a look lots of news today, No nv30, new video card 348 meg of ram, P4 3.06 is out and can get one now, or you can get IBM,s new chip.

I’m thinking of getting a new HDD because my 40Gig WDC HDD is filling up and I only have 9.65Gig left....
So I was wondering where should I putt my priority ???
1. In my C: drive Currently a WDC 30Gig
2. In my D: drive backup disk currently 40Gig
3. Transfer most of the files to one of my other 2 drives that are lying around and switch my 30Gig C: to the 40Gig.............
but anyway Tell me what you think and why.... Please....
P.S. I was looking into the WDC JB (8MB cache) series (The 80Gig I found for $130). The WDC with the 2MB cache is $105 on the same site…

Put your back up on cd. then you have lots of room. You can use ghost to cd
-
If you have the resources, I would keep the smaller drive as C: and use the larger drive as the Data drive. then add a third (if you have the controllers for it) to use for backups. Though backing up to CD would make it easier to store on the shelf.
Perhaps try backing up to a drive stored in a USB 2.0 External 80GB drive (http://dirtcheapdrives.com/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={9F644272-621C-4357-9D0A-39845175273A}&ic=CFW%2D80GB72&Tp=)?
-
His m/b does not support usb 2.0. Will that still work?
-
Well my 40 gig is faster than my 30gigs and my raid controller isnt accepting any drivers that ive tryed to install... so I only have 2 sockets to work with....8/:;(:
-
:D:D But... on a good note I got my Sound card working again!!!! :D:D
-
WRT the USB 2.0, get the expansion card for it.
When you say that the RAID controller won't accept the drivers, are you talking about when you try to install the OS on it? Or otherwise? Is this on the mobo? If so, there should be drivers from the manufacturer.
If it is a problem with trying to load the OS, and the OS is NT/Win2K/XP, have you used the F6 option to load the drivers?
-
Yes I know all of that....
The controler is intagraded into the MoBo and I found some drivers for my OS (Win XP-SP1) but windows wont let me load them :;(: because thay are not "Digitaly signed" and I dont rememmber the loop hole for that...
anyway my MoBo isi way outdated and is starting to have trubbles (i.e. my sound card only works in one specific slot, all others will not work.)
So. as soon as I have the money to spend Im getting a ATI XP 2000 or 2100
and a nice ABit MoBo with Raid.....
That will take care of all my problems and my system will be 98% compleate
-
Next Intel cpu will be up to 50% faster say so long to AMD (This will be very bad for prices)
http://www.xbitlabs.com/
-
Yeah, 98% complete. At least for a year or so, then you will be only 2% complete!
-
Nope Thats not the case... I'm going to putt it above 1GigHrz and leave the main parts alone Im going to get an Audigy2 though. And somtime down the line I want a set of Klipch 5.1's :hubba::hubba:
-
And Now I have My New Monitor!!!!!
The 19" Samsung SyncMaster 900NF
Its SWEEETTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
It seems that I am in DIRE need of a new monitor. My precious NEC died yesterday.
A moment of silence please. ;(:
It was out of warranty as well. I had almost 2 good years with it. *sigh*
Where did you get it, and HOW MUCH???:

Everbody now....1....2....3...
AAAAAAHHHHHHH

ZW, what can I say? I've only spent $30 on all the monitors I've had in the last 10 years. I would think that yours could be written off as a business expense if you really tried. Personally, I get all of mine free of charge. :P
-
Dog! I am get all my equipment written off since I am a consultant.
I am thinking about a 19" for $179.
We'll see.
-
Greetings from Az. Saw some nice pictures but I bet it comes with a nice price tag. I'll be away from a computer until next mon. See you all when I get back from that big hole in the ground.

-
Gee once that comes out I might be able to upgrade to a geforce 4 ti4200.
-
Speaking of sales,
I have a friend that will have a brand new, never been used at all 64MB ATI 7000. He is asking $50. He will have it as soon as his new PC arrives.
He ordered a new Compaq, and this is the card that comes with it. He wanted a better card, but they couldn't put it in. He bought the better card, and when the nes system comes in, it's swappin' time!
Email me if you are interested. I will pass it on to him.

Sigh...
And here I sit with no upgrade in sight!
-
OK, I'm looking at a mini upgrade for my vid card. I think I will have about $100.
Right now I have the ATI Radeon 64MB DDR Video in Video out Card.
So I see my choices as...
1) ATI 8500 (non LE) 64MB for ~$92 by Sapphire
2) GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB by Asylum for $100
So .... give me some insite.
-
Id go with the ATI myself But stay away from OEM and get Retail....
(OEM uses cheaper parts and are not as reliable)
-
You would be better off spending under $200 for an ati 9500 pro beat the 4600 when useing AA also DX 9. This card will take you into 2004. After Feb. look for prices to go down. You can pick up an Out Dated 4600 ($100- $125). All card prices will drop when the FX card comes out at $430 and then the MX's. Do not buy a card with only 64 megs. Doom needs 80 to run. UT 2003 will use 256 megs when the FX with 1 Gig comes out in Feb.
[Edited on 12-10-2002 by Boomslang]
-
i'm going to start to save.. that FX sounds awesome....
-
UT2003 will only require that much RAm when being used on an FX though. otherwise it will use what we give it. ;)
For my money, if you HAVE to buy now, I would good with the ATI 8500 ( GASP!!! Did ZW really recommend an ATI??? ). Yep you heard me, the ATI. The reason is benchmarks show that the 8500 runs faster than the Ti 4200. Now if you were somparing the Ti 4400, that would be another story.
BTW, I had a chance to upgrade a client yesterday, and we went from a VGA out to a flatpanel to a DVI out to the same flatpanel. OH MY GOD!!!!!
The clarity difference was incredible! I knew that it would be better, but wow what a difference! Details showed up in stark contrast and it just looked so... so... BEAUTIFUL! :touched;
-
I just went out to pricewatch.com to check out the latest processor prices and was surprised to find just how much prices on everything had dropped. Go look and be amazed.
-
Well, I went and got the TI4200 yesterday, perhaps I should return it and order an 8500? Shoot! Now I don't know what to do. From the benchmarks at Tom's VGA Graph (http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20020418/index.html) it looks like the TI4200 is faster. So what benchmarks have your seen ZW?
*** Problem with the link was a set of characters that translated to a smiley. ZW**

There we go, now it works. Who needs smiley's anyway.
[Edited on 12-12-2002 by Morpheus]
-
Good one Morf this is what you get --> Sorry! The Requested Page was not Found!!
-
I can't remember the other ones, but I thought that the Tom's Chart said that the Ti 4200 was a step below the 8500, but then I was focused on the Ti 4400.
So I am still faster than anything ATI except the most expensive!
WOOT!
-
Well I was not looking to upgrade yet but I had an oppurtunity to build a machine for my brother-in-law with a budget of $500.00. So my goal was to bless him and get an upgrade. Concidering he was going to spend that much on a HP celeron machine with everything built into the MOBO I figured I could build a much better machine for the same money. I got him an Case Edge ATX Case with 350W PS for $59, a7v8x mobofor $130, I bought a xp2100 for $112, the same price I paid for my 1800 two months ago so I gave him my 1800 and put the 2100 in my machine. I bought a 128 meg ATI 8500 for $95 and sold him Kailees GF2MX-440 for $50. Got a 40 gig WD HD ATA100 for $99, sony 52x CDR for $24.50, installed a CDRW he had previously bought a year ago but didnt know how to install it and gave him my 512 of PC2100 I won at the last game day. Total cost was all was said and done was $506.00 Keep in mind the MOBO has integrated lan and onboard sound. I gave him my time and ended up with an upgrade. Kyle now has my GF2Ultra and is a happy camper. I am in need of a video card for Kailee yet but will pass mine to Kyle and the Ultra to her machine when I finally get the card I want.
-
I am getting ready to do some work on Ruth's PC, so I may have a card fro you soon. What OS is she running on her PC?
-
Well, the card is in.
I had an interesting upgrade. Got the card installed, loaded the drivers and rebooted. As it was coming up, just got to the Windows XP start up screen. It crashed.
Troubleshoot, troubleshoot, troubleshoot, SHOOT! The power supply died! So, got a 450 Watt and fired it up. Here are the benchmark results.

It's still amature level compared to the systems I work on.
-
what Your Card has 10 VPU's on it ????
I dont think so!!!!
-
Do this, go to www.sgi.com and look for a "Reality Center" with an Origin 3900 and V12 graphics. You want to see some graphics? Try having a system with 512 processor, 30 terabytes of RAM, and an internal system bandwith of 6.4 gb per second between componets. Oh, and BTW, this is a single system image, not a cluster like you have with Linux. And if you ever want to upgrade, we have systems that can be scaled up to 2048 processors and 120 tb of ram. Throw on a pedabyte or two of CXFS storage and our ready to model nuclear explosions.
Welcome to super computing Junior.:evil
-
Oh, forgot to say that in a 512 processor config you can have up to 128 VPU's.
-
well I sertanly sit corrected... Behold the SUPER COMPUTER!!!!!
but the simFUSION 6000 is for the home PC :P so, your talking apples and bannanas!!!!

Well.. my upgrade has been going for about 2 months or so. Finally after solving some voltage issues/jumpers, my system seems to be stable at the present time. I have reinstalled UT and haven't had a problem, glich, or a slow down since. I noticed something amazing saturday night. I have a Volcano 6+, I believe with an XP 1600+. Ever since I have had this cpu, it has ALWAYS run at about 107 degrees on boot up and then when tasking it with UT it usually heats up to an average 120 degrees. However, I went through and used some air to blow everything out again, did some Windows XP tweaking, bios flash and now something is different. I used ASus Probe the last 2 nights and was recording my temps and voltages on bootup and during UT. My rig was booting up at about 100 degrees and when playing UT for about an hour, my CPU rose to a whopping 105 degrees! WOO HOOO... Now I have aired out my case before and was never able to get my cpu down from the before temps, it always stayed the same.
Whatever it was...yahoooooooey!
Looking forward to a little more UT!

New VGA charts at Toms (http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20021218/index.html)
Well, I'm glad this came out. I got the best card for the price range I was looking at. TI4200 beats the 8500 everywhere! And in UT2003 it's a BIG margin 38 fps. Yeah for $50 I could have gotten a better card but I didn't have the $50. Hey, the TI4200 even beat the 9700pro on Jedi Knight II. Woo Hoo!
I got a CPU upgrade last night not big, went from 1.33 to 1.4. I'll do some benchmarks tonight and post tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see the impact. Unless someone requests it, I won't go back and benchmark my Radeon 7200 64mb DDR VIVO card.
The other thing that is cool my benchmarks aren't far off of Tom's so I know my system is performing as expected.

I have a Hercules Geforce2 Pro 64mb DDR card. I used the 3d tweaker they have and was able to overclock it.
Stock settings:
200 core
400 memory
Overclocked settings
240 core
420 memory
So my card is now rocking for an older card...
I did the 3dmarks2001. At first I got around 4500. Now overclocked I have 4860.
But I need to get a new card.....lol

CATALYST 3.0 - 10:49 am EST - G.I.Bro
Bring on cinematic realism! Today Microsoft released DirectX 9 to the world. DirectX 9 is an API (Application Programming Interface) built into Windows, that provides direct access to your graphics hardware.
Simply put, DirectX is a Windows technology that enables higher performance in graphics and sound when you're playing games or watching video on your PC.* DirectX 9 will enable movie-like graphics with its advanced nature.
Once again ATI and its industry-leading software suite CATALYST, pave the way for more realistic visual experiences.
All ATI graphic card owners with a RADEON class VPU will benefit from DX9.
Instructions:
1) Download DirectX9 from Microsoft DX9
2) Download CATALYST driver from ATI CATALYST 3.0
3) Check out the demos and screensavers at the same page as number 2 (for RADEON 9500/9700 series cards).
4) Stare at screen in amazement!
As if that is not enough, there is more!
As with most CATALYST(tm) releases, the performance has increased in many various situations. Here are some examples observed in CATALYST(tm) version 3.0.
A performance improvement of up to 35% at high resolutions is noticed in the game Jedi Knight. This performance improvement is noticed across all ATI RADEON(tm) products.
The RADEON(tm) 9000 PRO experiences a performance improvement of 2% to 4% in the game Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Wolfy found a nice card for the money. It compares to the 4600 for about $200.00 and has extra bells and whistles. Yes it is a DX 8.1 card but is asus and supports AGP 8x. Nice find Wolfy.

First, it was spam. I hate spam regardless of the content.
Second, it's a Compaq so there is bound to be issues at upgrade time. Unless you do like Opie and use it only for work stuff and have another machine for gaming.
-
And that is the only sane way to do it. You are bound to run into problem from the gaming. It's just the nature of the beast. The only way I'd combine the two is to either have a dual boot machine or have a removeable hard drive.

I thought spam was something you didn't what to receicve in the mail?. Just because you don't like compaq, I don't ether. But, it is a good deal.

Not argueing that. Just saying that it was a message from TigerDirect that was blasted out. Unless you chose to be on their list, then it's not spam, just marketing drivel.
With regard to the Compaq thing. Like I said, I wouldn't want it for a gaming rig (remember trying to get Rob Carpenter's PC on the network?) but I would use it for work alone.

My next upgrade will be a new mb cpu and memory. I'm looking at the nForce2 chipset (SPP north bridge and MCP-T south bridge). I want it to have serial ata. So there are 3 possible mb's:
ABIT NF7-S $133
ASUS A7N8X deluxe $148
Chaintech 7NGS $178
I will probably go with the ABIT for price.
Memory I'm looking at 2 256mb PC-3200 (400 mhz) CAS2 sticks at about $100 a piece.
I'll upgrade my cpu too, but not much it'll depend on prices in a month or so once I get the money for the upgrade.
-
just a thought...
I have read that it is better to have 1 stick of 512mb then 2 sticks of 256mb.. Using 2 sticks slows down your ram.
-
I believe the nForce2 chipset with dualDDR memory architecture has to have 2 dimms to be full utilized.
nVidia Tech Brief (http://www.nvidia.com/docs/lo/49/SUPP/nForce_TwinBank_Memory_Architecture_Tech_Brief.pdf)
Also see Tom's review of 3 nForce2 boards (http://www6.tomshardware.com/mainboard/20021111/index.html)
Specifically the ASUS board has 2 colors for the dimm sockets:
If you want to run double-channel mode, please insert at least two DIMMs into different banks - thanks to the different colors, this is pretty simple.
I have seen it stated that you definitely want cas2 memory, and that there won't be much difference between PC-3200 and PC-2700, but the difference in price between the 2 was about $7/stick last I checked.
You can see that the test setup used by Tom's in the above article also uses 2 dimms.
The memory system is I believe the primary reason that the nForce2 is the fastest AMD chipset available, so I certainly want to take advantage of it.
Thanks for spuring me into further research!
-
Also at xbit labs (http://www.xbitlabs.com/mainboards/nforce2-kt400/)
In order to activate the dual-channel 128bit memory access in an nForce2 based system, you have to use two memory modules (it would be better if they were identical). When there is only one module, the system will work in the usual single-channel 64bit mode, which has been borrowed from the nForce2 predecessor.

I have read the Very Opposite… Actually I have seen data and charts on the matter and they prove that having two or more is faster and allows more bandwidth in the memory
As soon as I find the article I will post it ( I think it was on Toms or sharkys)…
-
I believe that the speed of the RAM based on the number of sticks depends on the technology used.
I can see how having 2 sticks would reduce bottlenecks, as you now have 2 interfaces instead of 1, but I can also see where 1 stick would reduce addressing overhead.
-
I would have to agree that you need to know all the factors to decide. Sometimes we don't have all the specs we need like timings and such to know the pros and cons. It is nice when someone like Tom does the testing for us and can identify the best combo or application since he has all the resources to do such tests.

RAM Banks and performance
The advantage to having multiple banks on one DIMM is that each bank can have a row (or "page") active and waiting to spit out data. You'll remember from the previous edition that only one row at a time in an individual bank can be active, and that whenever you need data from a row other than the active one, 1) you've got to precharge the new row, 2) close out the active row, and then 3) open the new row for reading. All of this stuff that's involved in switching rows eats up valuable time, so it's best to keep a particular row active as long as possible. Plus, when a row is active, you can strobe column addresses to it without having to repeat the row address, which allows you to burst data from those columns onto the bus, one column after another. So the more rows of memory that a system can have open at once, the quicker the memory can get data to the CPU whenever it asks for it. And since only one row per bank can be active at a time, having more open rows means having more banks.
Another way to think about the need for multiple banks is to think of it all in terms of keeping the data bus full. If a 64-bit wide data bus is being run at 100MHz, then it has a lot of clock pulses flying by on it every second. Since two words of data can ride on a single clock pulse (one word on the rising edge and one word on the falling edge), the bus has a lot of potential clock pulses open every second that are available to carry pairs of 64-bit data chunks. So think of each clock pulse as having two empty slots that need to be filled, and think of the 100MHz bus as a conveyor that carries those pairs of slots by at a good clip. Now, if there were only one bank of memory, then there could be only one row open on each DIMM. If you had a system with only 1 DIMM then that one row would have to put out enough data every second to fill up all of those slots. Since memory accesses often move around from row to row, that's not likely to happen. That one bank would have to keep switching rows, and since switching rows takes time, a lot of those clock pulses would have to fly by empty-handed while the bank is doing its switching.
More banks gives you more rows open, so that each of those rows can do its part to fill up those clock pulses as they fly by. And if one bank needs to switch rows, another bank can (hopefully) pitch in with some data from its own active row and fill up those clock pulses itself so that none of the pulses get wasted while that other bank is taking care of its business. So you can see that having the ability to keep multiple banks, and thus multiple rows, open is essential to keeping a high-bandwidth data bus full. Note that regular PC133 SDRAM sports multiple banks per chip, but the higher bandwidth and double data rate of DDR DRAM makes the need for multiple banks even more critical.
On an added note, this discussion illustrates why two, 512MB DIMMs of SDRAM will outperform a single, 1GB DIMM. Since each DIMM can have up to four banks, regardless of its size, spreading your memory out among multiple DIMMs offers better performance because of the increased number of banks.

More on R350 6:02 PM - Joe "Steejee" West - Hardware: ATI - (124)
[Spicy Story] Sounds like ATI has an Ace up their sleave: a top dog at ATI has told us that the R350 will debut in march, and as told before will be 10% faster than the FX, but the kicker will be that it's also $150 cheaper. The massive price difference is due to the fact the R350 will be a 10 layer PCB, while Nvidia's fastest will require 12 layers. Graphics wars are gonna be interesting in the coming months to say the least...

Sapphire is offering a whole lot of card for the price, and the Radeon 9500 Atlantis Pro offers an impressive mix of price, performance and bundled extras. At a street price of under-$190, this compares to a name brand, retail GeForce4 Ti 4200-8X ($150-$160), GeForce4 Ti 4400 ($200-$210) and the GeForce4 Ti 4600 ($240+). Using this scenario, the Radeon 9500 Atlantis Pro is an excellent value, as the card equals the performance of a GeForce4 Ti 4600, yet can outperform it when anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are brought into play, and is fully DirectX 9 compatible.

ATI’s R350 is In Mass Production Now!
Posted 2/04/03 at 10:08 am by Anton
We have already told you that ATI’s updated version of the R300 graphics processor will compete against the GeForce FX-based cards this Spring and it is estimated that ATI’s new code-named R350 VPU will be more powerful compared to NVIDIA’s GeForce FX 5800 Ultra. What we have not told you is that ATI’s R350 is now in production at TSMC, as revealed over here and was confirmed by a source among add-in-boards manufacturers.
Currently there are not a lot of facts known about the actual graphics cards to be based on the novelty. It is logical to assume that the products will be equipped with 128 or 256MB of memory, though, there is no precise information about type of memory utilised on the graphics cards: will it be DDR-II in DDR-II mode or DDR-II in DDR mode or simply optimized DDR SDRAM chips. What I know for sure is that the memory used on such graphics cards will not be clocked higher than with the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra because such chips are very expensive. The R350 powered products will be branded as RADEON 9900 and will be uncovered at CeBIT.
Expect more information to come soon. As for the rumoured specifications, turn to the following news-stories:

Take a look at the SGI Altix 3700 Supercluster. I've seen the test systems scaled to 2048 Itanium processors with 16384mb of RAM (not a typo!). NASA Ames has one that is half this size already and talk is that they are considering spending another $70 mil to double it.
It makes all the difference in the world when all the processors can use all the available memory.

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 Motherboard
Current Cost: $145
Months on list: 3
Price Change: -$8
For three months now, the NVIDIA nForce2 chipset has been the performance leader for AMD Athlon XP users, this month is no exception, so we've gone back to the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe. ASUS has always been one of the first to market with new motherboards, with high performance levels, and with a high standard for quality as well. The dual channel DDR feature of this motherboard increases the available memory bandwidth significantly over previous motherboards that lacked this feature, and to top it all off, this motherboard supports both 266 MHz and 333 MHz FSB Athlon XP processors.
Starting off with the NVIDIA nForce2 chipset, the A7N8X comes with an AGP 8X port, 3 DIMM sockets (for up to 3GB of DDR), and it also has support for DDR400 DIMM. To run in dual channel DDR mode, you must install two sticks of memory into the different colored DIMM sockets. The A7N8X has onboard LAN capability, Serial ATA RAID support, and on-board sound with 5.1 audio support. Additionally, it has a dual IEEE 1394 port for a pair of fire wire devices and for increased connectivity, there is a USB 2.0 controller that allows up to four external USB 2.0 devices to be attached. Flexibility is the key with this motherboard, and it can run RAID mode 0, or 1 with the Serial ATA interface.
Serial ATA drives are finally creeping slowly into the market place, so we're happy to finally be able to provide an update to the AMD Extreme system that takes full advantage of the Serial ATA capabilities of this fine motherboard. With the anticipated Barton revision of the AMD Athlon XP line coming soon, the A7N8X Deluxe will have an increased life span, as a few other online publications are anticipating full compatibility between Barton, and current model Socket-A motherboards (that support 333Mhz FSB).

I always recommend an ASUS board just because they are the most stable board in production. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have fast and stable than ultra fast and prone to crash.
-
I am personally trying to decide between the Abit NF7S and the Asus A7N8X deluxe. I haven't decided yet. If I had the money in my pocket right now, I would probably go with the A7N8X for a couple of reasons.
1) It's ASUS they just make good boards, and they have a great track record, and the stability of the board can make or break you.
2) Dual LAN, might be fun to play with.
3) The digital out is digital coax vs optical. Since I want to wire this to my receiver, I would prefer coax vs optical since I will need 15 to 20 ft of cable. There really is no difference in sound quality between the two.
Unfortunately there is about a $20 difference, and I probably won't have the money for another month or two.
-
well the NF7S gives you more room around the cpu so you can cool your processor but abit chose to put the ram to close the the agp slot so you WILL have problems adding ram without removing the videocard first.
I think I would go with the "Asus A7N8X deluxe" It looks to be a better board if you have a small cpu cooler.

That's a good point!
I haven't decided on a cooler yet.

ATI to Launch R350 and RV350 Within Next 30 Days!
Posted 2/26/03 at 8:04 pm by Anton
During the Goldman Sachs Technology Investment Symposium ATI Technologies’ Vice President of Engineering, Dr. Dave Rolston, who is based just near the headquarters of the arch-rival NVIDIA Corporation in Santa Clara, California, confirmed that the company intends to launch its high-end R350 and mainstream RV350 graphics processors within the next 30 days.
No in-depth details were issued about the newcomers, though, it was said that the R350 chip is based on the RADEON 9700 architecture, but will deliver more power and speed and will be made using 0.13 micron technology. The RV350 part is also DirectX 9.0 compatible, as we revealed quite some time ago, made using advanced 0.13 micron technology and also offers significant performance boost over the previous generation mainstream architecture.
ATI’s VP of Engineering especially pointed out that the company had no problems with transition to 0.13 micron at TSMC and now the company is ready to manufacture the actual chips using this fabrication process. Dr. Dave Rolson said they are happy with the yields and it looks like the 0.13 micron technology is just what the doctor ordered for not very expensive, but powerful devices.
Talking about the company’s strategy, Mr. Rolson said that ATI Technologies makes a lot of efforts in order to push its products into rapidly expanding consumer electronics market. The company already has a number of design wins for set-top-boxes, PDAs and TV-sets, so, it seems that after some time you may find “Powered by ATI” brand on your mobile phone or STB.

Sounds good. Now prices will drop on the 9700 pro! Perhaps in time for the lanparty.
Speaking of ati's branching out it would be great for them to produce a chipset based off the 9000 line for pdas. Then I could play unreal tournament or carmageddon2 anywhere I go :D.

Everything changes in 2004 no pci no agp no ddr. check out the video at the bottom of the page
http://www.intel.com/technology/pciexpress/
-
Then we have to wait for the devices that support the interface, and I guarantee they won't be cheap!
-
I read about the PCI-X interface several weeks ago. On the surface it looks cool and I think that it will be very useful. I do not think that the devices will be quick to market and it will be a long time before they become a standard rather than the newest toy.
-
Sorry that last one was me, forgot to sign in.
-
Oh geez, how do I say this?
SGI has been using PCI-X for almost a year. The standard was agreed upon almost two years ago. It provides a very high speed bus for any PCI card put in it. Unfortunately you can probably count on two hands the products that are already on the market that support it.
-
which basically means most of us will go through at least 1 or 2 upgrades before we start using it.
-
Pretty much the track record for ANY new standards.
Take PCI for example. The sockets were on the boards, LOOOOONG before we saw cards that used them. And then there were 2 standards. I remember having to be careful what type of card we bought, edge or level based.
AGP? Had sockets out there for a long time as well. Finally video card manufacturers started producing AGP cards, but they were very expensive.

Conclusion: The Coming Months Should Be A Good Time To Buy A Video Card!
In an industry not quite ready to declare that happy days are here again, it is understandable the amount of emphasis that is being placed on the value and mainstream market segments. Our own Omid Rahmat, love him or hate him, in his tongue-and-cheek Valentine's Day special column hit the nail right on the head when he said "That means, NVIDIA, for all its faults right now, is a reflection of where the market is going." Clearly ATI has been following Omid's advice and they are ready to jump in and be even more aggressive in the mainstream and value segments with the 9600 and 9200.
The coveted sweet spot of the market, this is where most of you pick the cards that you buy. Yes, we all want a $399 killer super card, but we have bills to pay and wifes to answer to and we sometimes have to settle for something less. The reality of what has taken place here with these launches at GDC is that an aggressive pricing/performance war is going to take place. The battle lines are drawn with Nvidia wanting to maintain its leadership in this arena and ATI wanting to chip away at this market segment.
Of course the benefactor of this is the consumer who is finally going to get a Direct X 9 feature set at an incredible price and with wider adoption of these Direct X 9 cards, clearly the software developers are going to step up to the plate and deliver the new next generation titles that will make these new cards truly useful. At least this is how it is supposed to work, but over the next couple of months some great deals are going to be available on graphics cards, so do the research and as always we will help you with that by giving you through test results to allow you to compare the cards, and help the tech industry out by upgrading your graphics card.

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5800 Ultra is For Sale in Japan.
Four Months After the Announcement
by Anton Shilov
03/16/2003 | 06:42 PM
As X-bit labs predicted just one day less than four months ago, the first appearance of the GeForce FX 5800-based graphics cards in retail happened this weekend, four months after the announcement of the graphics processors. As reported at this Japanese-web-site reports, V9900 Ultra graphics cards from ASUSTeK Computer are available in numerous retail stores in Tokyo.
The prices on the novelty that boasts with 500/1000MHz speed for GPU and memory, 128MB of DDR-II SDRAM and features above and beyond DirectX 9.0 are a bit disappointing: from $498 to $542. It is not like you pay for extra performance or even the more advanced capabilities the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra can provide over the RADEON 9700 PRO, but you pay this enormous sum for getting a rare graphics card among the first. Even though BFG Technologies started to supply the first batch of the GeForce FX powered products some time ago to the US customers (see this news-story), there are still no such graphics cards in retail, as far as I know.
Well, the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra has at last made its appearance. I believe that the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra (aka NV30) will make its more or less massive appearance in Europe and the USA in the coming weeks. It is not really on time, but behind the schedule because NVIDIA promised in November to start selling the actual graphics cards in February, but, at least, the product is finally available. Will it be a good buy? Definitely, but it will not be a better buy than the code-named NV35 that is just around the corner and that is going to be considerably more powerful compared to the predecessor (see this and this stories).

Finally after many years of wanting and waiting I have all of the parts on the way for the new machine.

After much review and investigation, I have completed what one might say is my last upgrade for a while. I think I am at the point of being able to last for quite a while now. I continued on with AMD and have a true 333 mhz through-put, no bottlenecks. Here are the components and I am very pleased with the outcome and performance.

Sounds like you are right there as well, I am excited to see you again at the game days. You have been missed! I will talk to the guys and make them all agree to take it easy on you until you get your grove back. I am sure they will all agree...........NOT! :rolling Congrats!

BTW YODA........Nice Avatar!

I have no expectation of any one being easy on me. That is just part of the game. I can't wait until I can start gamming again.
Forgot to add that I just wired the house for a cable modem, just need to get a power suply for the modem I have.
Also forgot the display. For home use a Sun Microsystems 21" crt made by Sony, and for the road a Viewsonic G90FB.
I thought that the avatar was cool.

Perhaps Asus is more compatible with Amd chips versus the Intel chip? This would be the first I have heard of it. Which motherboards were you running into the problem with. I'd be interested in knowing.
Sorry to hear you have been running to issues. Hope the MSI board works for you.

b/b has the 5200 for $80
I just put in a new sata 120 gig H/D Maxtor. It is faster than the ata drives. I do see a performance increase. I see its much slower then the $300 74 gig W/D raptor. But at 3 times the price and doesn’t improve FPS

Yo ,
I have an NVidia GeForce 4 ti 4400
it kicks ass, I love it, but it is time to upgrade and well I need some help. I don't know if I should get the latest from NVidia or ATI.
Now I alredy know that most of seem to be ATI people I just want to know what you have heard about each. I have seen the data but the Data... well it doesn't alway work to go with the data alone on somethings.
So if you gent would be so kind I would apreciate it.
Cheer-e-o.
Jolly
-
Well I love my 9800 Pro!!!!!!!
It looks great and my 3DMark score went from 8921 or so with my ATI R8500 to 14921 and that’s with total details not performance options. With my R8500 I had to have all of it on performance to get the Marks I got…..
-
Personally, I have a Radeon 9700 Pro in my machine and a Radeon 9500 Pro in my mom's machine.
I think ATI puts out great cards..but so does Nvidia. If I had to vote...i would say ATI. I think the graphic definition is better...and the colors seem to be a little more vibrant.. but that is just my eyes.
:D
-
At this point in time I'd go ATI. Better quality image equivalent FPS. I have the 9600 pro that I won at the last game day WOOT!

No wolfy I have noteced the same thing between ATI and Invidiot... ATI has always had the better looking grafix in games and such
-
Umm read it again Dragon you are saying the same thing....:P
-
I have stuck by nVidia for some time, but I am considering a switch to ATI. The nVidia line is showing poor support and performance, whereas ATI seems to have overcome this and fought it's way back top the front lines.
Will nVidia come back up to it's former glory? Only time will tell.
-
Well Obviously Dragon has a Complex...
WOW!!!
I have been An NVidia Man Myself and have noticed that they have been slacking off or something. I just Don't want to buy an ATI and then NVidia comes out of its hole and takes a Giant Dump on ATI and I am left in the stink to clean up. But then if I don't buy something I am still left behind (AAAHHH!)
Well I dunno what to do...

NVIDIA FO LIFE MOFUGGERS!!
-
Jolly,
You have to remember that with most technology the shelf life is about 6 months. So no matter what you buy in 6 months, and usually less, it's obsolete. Unless you are willing to shell out the $500 every 6 months or so, you will be behind at some point. My approach is to look for the best bang for my buck, which means I may be behind the technology a little bit, but I can upgrade a little more often. With video cards here is what I've done the last few years.
When I bought my PC in June 2001 or so, I got an ATI 7200 VIVO for $125. I had good quality graphics and plenty of FPS for the games we were all playing.
Then a little over a year ago I got the GeForce 4 TI4200...great card for the money...cost me $100. I didn't NEED to upgrade because I still had good enough FPS for the games we were playing, but it was worth it.
Now I won the ATI 9600 pro at the last Ambush! lan party, I expect to be very happy with it for a year or so. Then I'll have to research the available options and get the best price for performance at that time.
As I said previously right now I would go with ATI. In reviews their image quality seems to be better, which is consistent with history ATI has been noted for years as having better image quality.
I've compiled the latest benchmark data from Toms Hardware (http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031023/index.html) into an excel file and pulled prices from Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com). You can use this to help in your research. My pick based on the data would be the ATI 9600 XT for $172. If that was too much money I would go with the ATI 9600 pro for $139. Here is my spreadsheet (http://members.cox.net/brad.simmons/VideoCards.xls). The ratio of cost to benchmark results is at the end. Basically it shows the cost per benchmark point, so lower is better. You still have to take into consideration othe aspects as well. For example, which games do you play or expect to play, and how the specific card performs in that game. How anti aliasing and anistropic filtering effect frames, if you want to even use them.
If you right click and choose save as, you can then change the prices to what you can find (rebates can make a huge difference) when you are ready to buy.
By analyzing the data in this fashion, you get out of the emotional ATI fanboy nVidiot mentality and actually base decisions on facts. The fact is that both companies product excellent cards.

Morpheus,
Thanx for the Data it will help out alot, Wow.
Nice Choice in the Game for the Benchmark:)
I know that I will alway be behind for awhile but I am looking at the Long term. Like I said above I currently have a GeForce 4 Ti 4400 and at the time it was awsome and it still performs great. As you well know it is hitting the 2 year mark... Upgrade time! Iwant to buy a card that will last just as long with the same results. I'm just having the pre-buy butterflies, if you know what I mean. I am shure that what ever I buy it will more then saticefy my thurst for supurb Grafix.
Thanks again Morpheus

how much do you have to spend???
Cuz if at all posible you should get the ATI 9800 pro for around $400 its defenetly the top card just under the 9800 XT

Moneys not a worry.
Its just the whole I want to make sure of what I buy. I could spen $400 or $700 on a card and not be worried. I just want to make sure that i am happy with the card.
I See the data on the both of the cards in question Thanx to Mopheus for that, but I also did my own reaserch I found in "most cases" ATI came out above NVidia but only by 2 to 5 FPS nothing to soil you boxers about in my book.
-
Better look at the bad drivers NV has put out. What use to plague ATI has now been placed on NV. I like eye candy and have pay a price for it ($$). Ati with the omega drivers is the best looking combination out there. It is now easer to write code for ATI than NV. You figure it out if your making games which one are you going to write for?
-
thats a good piont, I was unaware of that.
-
quick note here. I am still using a nVidia card, and there is Omega drivers for nV.
I have only had a very few "bad drivers" from nV, and stick to the Omega drivers exclusively. The key here in my opinion is this:
What are you willing to pay, and how "GREAT" does it have to look right now?
I have a Ti4200, and will replace it next year most likely. I generally go 2 years on a card anymore. So plan for a card that is far enough ahead to be good for atleast 2 years, but won't break your bank.
I don't feel that $500 for a card is reasonable when I plan to replace it in 2 years. That would be $250/year!
But $100-$200 for a card would be much more reasonable. Maybe even as high as $250.
But then I don't always need the "eye-candy". ;)
Just my thoughts on the issue.

My next upgrade will be more memory.
-
Well, as any of you who attended the nerd club event know, my video card is on it's last legs. My next upgrade will be to replace it as soon as possible, but I want your opinions. I'm considering the ATI 9600XT Pro. It's the price vs. preformance thing.

This is better 9700 pro is alot faster and not much slower than a 9800 pro

If you didn't catch it, on page 10 of this thread, I posted on my recommended video card. Since then Tom's has done the VGA charts III which has a similar chart with the new FBucks. A lot depends on how much money you want/have to spend. I think the decision process has to be:
1: determine what the minimum acceptable performance is (althought the "best" Fbuck score, you don't want a GF4 MX440)
2: determine price range you can, are willing to spend, (e.g. $100-$150, $150-$200, etc.)
3: look at the Fbucks score to determine the best price/performance card in that range
4: check out the benchmarks for the specific games I play/think I would like to play
5: scour the internet for the best price
I would probably go with (prices from pricewatch.com):
1) ATI9700Pro for $212 = .84
2) ATI9700 128mb for $185 Fbucks = .86
3) ATI9600XT for $154 Fbucks = .78
4) ATI9600Pro for $112 Fbucks = .99
5) GF4 ti 4200 8x $75 Fbucks = .78

Get the ATI 9700 Pro video Card. I actually got the Powercolor one for a great buy. Price per performance...by just adding a little more cashola you get a 9700 PRO!
Like Boom said...it isn't that far off from the 9800 cards.
I have both the 9700 pro and the 9500 pro cards in mine and my mom's machine... I'm very happy with their performance, price, and graphic clarity.
Go ATI!:hat:

SiS Unleashes PCI Express-enabled South Bridge
Chipset Maker Ignites PCI Express Era
by Anton Shilov
01/16/2004 | 12:48 PM
Silicon Integrated Systems, a well known core-logic maker, today unveiled its new I/O controller designed for next-generation applications with PCI Express bus. The move indicates readiness of core-logic hardware developers to the next decade of PCI Express-based applications.
The new SiS965L South Bridge will be compatible with current SiS chipsets, such as SiS661FX, SiS648FX, SiS655FX, SiS655TX, SiS748, SiS755, SiS755FX and SiS760. Manufacturers can benefit from greater compatibility and improved sales and support by using a current generation SiS chipset updated to the new PCI-Express standard with the SiS965L I/O controller.
SiS965L features 2 PCI-Express x1 ports, 6 PCI ports, 8 USB 2.0 ports, 8-channel sound, 10/100Mb/s Ethernet, 2 Serial ATA-150 ports with hot plug functionality and RAID, 2-channel Parallel ATA-33/66/100/133.
SiS said its new SiS965L is available immediately giving SiS customers the opportunity to have PCI-Express functionality with today’s generation of SiS chipsets.
-
OK, I went with the 9600 Pro XT with 256mb. I just could get myself to shell out for the price of a 9800 XT when I know that PC based PCI-E is just a few months away.
-
Yeah, thats kinda what curbed my updating. I just retire my Gamming machine and use it for developement.
and buy a whole new machine.
-
Well then get one of these with all the money you saved:lol

Quality control slipping at Asustek?
Deformed caps on mobo
HAS ASUSTEK'S gradual shift of focus to the more lucrative notebooks business been at the expense of quality control in other areas?
Mainboard manufacturing was their original core money spinner, but this page, here, details a worrying lapse somewhere along the line.
Asus admits it has manufactured a batch of VIA K8T800 based K8V Deluxe mainboards for Socket 754 AMD Athlon 64 processors, that have at least nine defective electrolytic capacitors. These electrolytic capacitors are part of the power stabilisation circuitry, and Asus say that they might expand and fracture.
The offending capacitors are apparently marked 'RLZ 0333' and Asus advises that concerned customers should contact their supplier or nearest service centre. µ
I had to return two P800 delux (865)and went with MSI

Don't forget the $400 for ddr2
-
I don't know yet, boom. With what I am reading, the DDR2 isn't really as fast as its DDR counterpart.
DDR2 may be more scalable for the cpu's but it's higher latency and lower voltage doesn't allow it to show its strength as much. Time will see if it comes out of its shell.
-
I'm not looking for much of an upgrade for a while....maybe a video card if I find the right price. I want to wait for 64 bit to prove it's place, and PCI express, maybe DDRII. In my opinion in a year or so these technologies will have begun to mature, and that will be a MAJOR upgrade ($$$). So until then I'm pretty happy with my 2500+ and ATI 9600 Pro.
-
You won't have a chose. ddr2 will phase out ddr

Logitech readies top gaming mouse
Sensitive to twitches and whiskers
By Charlie Demerjian: Monday 17 January 2005, 10:09
LOGITECH IS ABOUT TO CHANGE gaming peripherals once again with a new mouse. One of the things it did not announce at CES was the new 518 mouse. This successor to the MX510 gaming mouse combines the best of the older one, the laser technology from the MX1000, and has a new twist.
The twist is adjustable DPI, intended for the gamer. The 518 has a hardware switch that will instantly change the sensitivity from 800 to 1200 to 1600DPI. Need twitchy response for fast maneuvering, done. Slow things down for sniping? Done. Overall, a really bright idea, I look forward to Logitech announcing it. µ
-
Hmmm, I had to switch from the Razer to the MX700 last night because it was just frustrating me when it came to sensitivity. Might have to look at this.
-
I now have a new Vid Card on the way.
I tried running BF2 and it wouldn't run with my existing card because it only had 64MB of VRAM.
I talked to the Mrs. and I am now ordering this (http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/product_spec.asp?MPSNo=14&PISNo=321) card.
It is on it's way for a total of $147, including NextDay shipping AND rush order option. It should be here tomorrow, and I will be fragging like mad!!
let's see how my performance in the games will improve now that there is no video lag!
-
Nice, very nice...lookslike you joined the ranks. now it mine ane snauz's turn to upgrade
-
Thanks to Anderson for helping me find this.
-
No prob. For me, I just ordered some fan filters because I am getting way too much dust into my system and I was looking for a way to keep it a little more clean.
-

-
One of the things Z insisted on is having 256 Mb Ram in the card.
-
Next upgrade is an 6800 GT running higher than the ultra card.
425 / 1.11 with a 2c increase. 3DMark3 from 10,799 to 12,228
Thank to Zalman V cooler

Man some peps should just wait a week. WOW

WOW that is one powerful card!!
Too bad I won't be able to afford it whe it comes out.
-
If I wait for the next latest and greatest I will never get to buy something.
-
Thats a very true fact.
-
Ok two things Why did the bench the X800 GT 256 with a 6600 LE 128 and the brag about it, That just looks bad, The y should've benched it with a 6600 LE
256.
Second. Just because it is over clocked dosn't mean it is better. it is still an X800. While Benchmarking is a good way to tell how well your sysrem performs it don't tell you how good it looks.
I must admit the price is good, I am just not sure if it actully is worth it to me.
While ATI has alway seem to bench better then nVidia, thaey alway seem to be lacking in quality, I have found that the nVidia Card seem to render better then ATI.
-
they were basing it off price.

Weeeee!!!
I just got a $50 gc for Newegg, and an unexpected check. So I'm on the hunt for a new graphics card so I can play BF2. I'm beginning my research, and would like to open this up for input. It needs to be in the $100-$200 range and an AGP card.
I'm running an XP 2500+ and 1gb ram and a ATI 9600 pro right now.

With respect to that nVidia that Boom suggested, I like it, but would suggest this one instead:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150113
In my reasoning this card has 256MB of VRAM instead of the 128MB that Boom linked. I would prefer to have that extra RAM for future games, since most are now wanting 128MB to run, and this would put you ahead of the curve.
Just my $.02.
-
I heard that Quake 4 will need 128 MB RAM also. Hopefully they will not have as many issues as BF2!

What I need is about 512 Megs of system ram added to my system!!!

Thoughts?

You changed your mind? go with the 256 ram
-
ok What do you think I should look for as far as system RAM goes???
I would Like 1 gig more but will settle for 512... Oh, and they have to be dule channel
any suggestions???
-
OCZ Baby!!
I have been using their platnium edition and man it is fast!
Also for Morph's Vid card, I also would say go with the 256 Mb RAM.
-
I use OCZ as well, very nice memory and usually priced well too. I've used it in a couple of systems.
-
I just found another contender so here are the 2 choices I trying to decide between now.
ATI x800 pro 256

nVidia 6800

And how is it??
-
Looks Nice...the changing weight thing tho is weird..let us know how it is
-
I haven't had time to play with it. I’ve been up at the hospital every waking moment. Might have so time latter.
-
Finally, Logitech gave the G5 a major improvement in one area that might not seem obvious: the feet. On almost all its previous mice, including the MX518, Logitech used your standard mouse feet, and they all glided the same way. I won't bother spelling out the compound that the G5's gaming feet are made out of (poly-tetra-something-ylene), but it's a much, much smoother glide. I should add that both the Razer Diamondback and Copperhead have an extremely smooth glide as well, so it's good to see that Logitech has caught up in this department.
Ultimately, if it came down to a fight between the G5 and the Copperhead, I'd give this round to Logitech. The G5 is many ways greatly improved over the MX518, while the Copperhead doesn't feel all that different than the Diamondback -- in fact, I still prefer the Diamondback as my mouse of choice. About the only thing keeping me from jumping to the G5 altogether is the larger size -- if Logitech could include a smaller size in its lineup, I'd probably be on board in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be in the cards just yet, as we're still waiting to get our hands on the upcoming (larger) G7 cordless laser mouse -- I'll just enjoy my Diamondback for now, and we'll keep you posted as the new goodies come in

I find it funny that his beef with the G5 is the larger size, and he likes the Diamondback for the smaller size. My beef with the Diamondback is that it is so small, and I prefer the MX700 for the larger size.
I am waiting, somwhat impatiently, for the G7 so that I can maintain my wireless and get rid of the MX700, and maybe the Diamondback.
-
I can't wait to get a G5 it will fit my hand and I can weigh it down.
That is the feature I am looking forward to the most.
the 2000dbi will be nice too.

I forgot about the keyboard. That will be something I get BEFORE the mouse. Maybe. We'll see.
-
Good news, I have had 2 keyboards die on me last night.
One was pretty much already broken, but the other one (My main one) started giving me some issues.
am seriously thinking about getting the logitech.
-
Perhaps you should look into what is killing your keyboards before getting a new one?
-
Well the first one I had the keys were not registering even if I was pressing down on them. When I wasn't pressing down, it would think I was pressing them down at an inappropriate time.
For the second keyboard, I figured that it must have a short in it. I figured this because when I try to type, it thinks that caps lock, shift, and Ctrl are being held down all at once.
-
Well u snooze u lose The keyboard came out TODAY AND THERE ALL GONE.
i GOT UP TO LATE.Check tomarrow it was to be the 8th and I didn't get notified bay logitech.

Nvidia nails R520XT with 512MB 7800 GTX
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27400
-
Well, I can tell you now that I will not be getting a new vid card for a while.
I probalby will go with SLI if I ever have the money.
But that is a big if......
Very big if....
-
as I start on my new system I will have either the 7800 GTX (512 ofcourse)
Or what ever comes along between now and then.
-
With SLI, I have been hearing issues if you try to use different SLI cards. I have also heard that there has been issues between the same model, but different revision.
So you might want to save up and get two of them at once.

-
we had paired ddr ram now we will have paired v cards
-
woo hoo!
-
Sounds good to me!!
-
I'll probably go with SLI or Crossfire in about 1-2 years. If I do, I probably will end up building another computer.
-
Same here
-
For me, if I upgraded to SLI I don't really want to get rid of the motherboard and vid card becaous they are very recent. All I would have to do is just pull out a cd drive, one hard drive, 2 gig of ram and I would just need a few things for another computer. I probably would even build my own case if I had the time.
-
Maybe...

-
It's just a little pricy for those things... but they do look comfortable!

I read about this a while ago, looks like sweet card. at this point in time I am going to hold out for my next system, and get a 7800 gtx w/ 512mb ddr3. or what ever is tops at that point. but it's a sweet looking card for sure.
-
The way that they are comming out with these cards right now there will be somthing three more times powerful than what is out in the market.
-
very tempting :jawdrop:
I think with the rate things are coming out and that my system is holding up right now, it is making the decision to upgrade really hard... :)
-
Before upgrading, I would start going through tons of sites for the newer parts to see how they compare to the ones that are out now.

You can get a 7800 gtx w/ 512mb ddr3 today $799
at that price I,ll do sli
-
I would still wait. But thats just me.
-
No, The only reason I can't is that i have no money to do it with but, it looks like even ATI can't top the 7800 w/ there latest card. With the 512 model out it is too good. the price it good but i need a new Mobo, too.
there is an Asus board i think i want too then the processor. *sigh* but I need lots-o-money that I don'[t have.

I thought that I would point out that you can find a 7800gtx w/512 mb starting at 500. Not at 800. They do make some that costs that much, but the base price is 500.
-
Well, I'm not sure about that. at least the quality. NVidia, quote MSRP starts at 800 for 7800gtx w/ 512
-
I'm pretty sure the quality won't be that good, but I have seen them that low.
-
I would rather pay a little more for something i can trust
-
I will be upgrading from a 2100+ to a 2700+ this weekend. :) WOO HOOO! sa-weeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
-
I will be upgrading......
Hmmm.....
What can I upgrade??
Oh wait, I can upgrade my laptop!
-
with a new laptop!!!!
Yesss
-
I already have 1 gig of RAM on the way. I'll get the second after Febuary or so.
-
Where have you guys seen the 7800 512MB?? at any price
-
Okay, that was weird.
I saw a leadtech 7800gtx 512Mb on Newegg.com on the auto notify for about 500, but it looks like they took it off for some reason.
-
I am beginning my upgrade investigation and will be posting the planned hardware for those that are interested. I plan to begin ordering in the next couple of weeks. Next month should be a key month for lots of good advancements to arrive. L8r
-
Woot!!
A 2fer. Spade posts, and he is gonna update us on his research. I love Spade's upgrades research. Never has there been a more thorough look into the options that are out there than when he does it.
-
hmmm....this should be intreting

I talked to him last night. He now sees the light. The conroe light!
Fould a good read on up grades http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/

Yeah, and on the front page of that site is this article (http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1830/) about the Conroe not being as good as hoped.
:lol

uh...Uhhh. what do we say.

My next upgrade is only partially a computer upgrade. I might haul it out to a LAN Party, we'll see.
37" LCD HDTV w/ VGA input from Dell
Call of Duty is so sweet at 22" x 35"
-
*sigh*
:crash:
-
It might not perorm as well as you might think. HDTV resolution is a lot less than even the cheapest CRT.
-
...
standard tv is like 480 x 620 to 800 x 600
HDTV runs like 1024 x 768 and goes up. standard HD is like 2048 x something.....
-
HDTV is 1024x768 and when spread out across 37 inches will look extremely blocky. The HDTV resolution does not go up either. It's resolution in monitor terms is equivalent to XGA.

It might be kind of blocky when you are 6" away, but from 3'-6' away it looks pretty sweet. And this is even MY computer we're talking about. It would probably look a little better on a faster machine. I just think it is cool to see 2' tall bad guys.
Also I had already played when I posted last. It was not a hope or wish...I was making a statement of fact.
-
Ewwww, busted you Opie. :D
Congrats on the upgrade Papa!
-
What resolution are you playing at?
-
Not overly high...13something by 768 and in 16:9 aspect ratio
-
16:9?!? How shweet!
-
I guess I should have mentioned that the wide screen version of xga resolution on a 32 inch is 1366 x 768 pixels. It's a little less on a 30" at 1280 x 720. Now some manufacturers have better compression technology and some even use two compression methods to make small text more readable, but the native resolution (best performance) is going to come at the 1366 x 768 resolution. If you run that display at higher resolutions you will have a harder time reading smaller text or working on low resolution images because the compression Lagos will distort the images.

I might have to wait for this. DDRIII is to double your bandwidth
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=32360
DDR-III will require new motherboards
Computex 2006 New everything in 2007
By Theo Valich: Monday 12 June 2006, 18:32
IT SEEMS THAT both Intel and AMD will target enthusiast users with gaming CPUs that will support DDR-III memory.
A second territory where DDR-III will take off as a standard is the world of FB-DIMM memory, where the main performance impact and power savings will come with the 1.5V, 1.06GHz working memory.
The best thing is: both DDR-II and DDR-III are set to be installed in 240-pin DIMMs.
Sadly, on the back of Vista, of course, 2007 will bring only one thing: new motherboards, new CPUs, new memory. And new case fans, speakers and screen too, why not?
With luck, a user that buys a DDR-III memory-equipped PC won't have to change the motherboard until 2009. µ

OK, I have not forgotten about you all, I am just dragging my feet a bit, I bought a cannon D-30 SLR Digital camera with all the accessories last month so I was distracted for a bit on the camera research but am back on the computer track now. I am catching up since the last research ended with the a7n8x deluxe and 2800 era. Hope to start posting soon as I see Boom in on the search.......:hotbouns:

Not only will you need 300w for your V/C
You will need a new O/S too.
-
Great news that! Now I know for sure that I will be waiting to do the next upgrade. No sense upgrading now to find out that I am totally behind on everything in 2-3 months.
It is acceptable to me to be behind the curve after 6 months, but not 2-3.

BFG 6800 oc doubled my fram rates in COD2 using DX9

You just bought a 6800? Why not a 7900? Just curious.

Not worth the $500 for the agp.

That would be reasonable.
