Gentle readers,
As we are working on the planning for the next event(s), we are also looking for ways to increase attendance at these events.

Please feel free to submit your ideas here and we will review and consider any and all suggestions.

Thanks!

hmmm, let me think on it....

Radio perhaps, but costs
I think timing has a lot to do with it.

Also focusing on advertising earlier.

Secure prizes earlier, to give people more incentive to make it fit their schedules.

Possibly have a few computers available for people to rent who don't have pc's.

32 hours is just too long.

Publish a tentative tournaments schedule sooner.  Base it on the number of teams signing up and adjust as more teams sign up.  Set up the tournament sign up online.

See if we can get a couple vendors to offer hardware etc. for sale at the event, then they might advertise the event in their store.

There used to be a computer sale at the radial hall once a month and one somewhere in lavista.  Perhaps there is a way to advertise there.

See if there is a way to get into some High Schools.

That's all the ideas I have for now.

As was noticed at the last lan party, it's the inability to control the foul language after repeated requests to do just that.

Not all "punks" are young, and there are several high school kids show more restraint and self control than us adults.  Careful with the prejudice.  We run the risk no matter how we promote of having people with foul mouths and lack of self control at our evetns.  Bottom line is we need to be proactive, ensure the standard is set, example is demonstrated, and violators and warned once, and then removed.

It just needs to be communicated that not everyone uses that language and we also have certain children approved/allowed to participate in these tournaments. If participants cannot use self control/restraint than there will be a warning. If that does not solve the issue, then they will be asked to leave.

Sorry for being out for awhile, will try to catch up with you all.  I have a couple suggestions that may help, some for advertising and then some as the game day is taking place.  1.)  It is possible to advertise on Omaha.com and to send out coupons to most major businesses, I have been in touch with Scott quite a bit in the past for such things and may be able to pull some strings to get us on for a reduced rate.  If it is as cheap as the paper, I think it may have more exposure to those types of peaple and businesses that we are looking to target.  2.)  Advanced planning as already mentioned is critical to secure the sponsors and prizes well in advance to go out with the advertising.  3.) Flyers in most of the computer stores is a great idea if that is possible and should be 30 days prior to the event.  We all can do our part and hand some out if we have them well in advance.  4.)  Drawings should be given out throughout the event and not just at the end.  Not all people stay till the end and should be able to claim a prize while they are there.  Example would be the DIT folks, we should have done the drawings before they left.  5.)  More cheeze dip :lol  6.)  Partnering with like Seather to advertise to his following like we did for him.  7.)  Limit the tournaments to 2 or 3 games to insure there is ample time to complete them all.  8.)  Post the ladders and settings of the server for each of the games.  9.)  At some point in the night when most players are there, have a intermission and have each player stand up and share his gaming name and where he or she is from.  So often we dont know who is who and this may create a greater interaction as the night goes on.  10.)  I still like the projector idea as the tournements are going on so those that want to can watch the players via spectator mode.  11.)  Advertising should also include the system requirements and hardware that is required as it may attrack new players that do not have machines that can run some of the newer games.  Maybe DIT would allow a couple machines to be set up and used as a demo for those that want to try a  faster or speedy machine.  Still thinking but that should do for now.

To spades 9th rule is when we stand up for our name and everything if we state the games we were looking forward to be playing such as counter-strike dod or starcraft, so that we know who to ask if we have a game thats not in the tourney.

i think your best bet is advertising your lan at other lans around the area... people who go to lans go to every lan possible and would have a great chance of getting them to come..

basically, perkins is going to advertise your lan for you guys, no questions asked. we support lans that we feel will be run well and will not attempt to screw people through the prizes (*cough* GZA2). perkins is responsible for about 50 people DIRECTLY who went to GZA2 (ie - they had no idea about it until we told them to go). we cant even estimate who went by us indirectly...

zwarrior, or whoever knows Nolan (urban), should get in contact with him at Omaha Stomping Groundz (www.stompinggroundz.com  90th and Center), or Travis (owner of OSG), and he will be able to help you the most. we will advertise for you guys and tell people who come to our LAN center to attend the Ambush LAN.

i'd rather not explain why we thought the prizes were not distributed fairly to everyone. nor will i point out the major faults in the way the lan publically. the GZA staff most likely doesnt/didnt recognize it either.

email me (brh68@cox.net) if u want to know more about this for future refrence to running LANs (such as your Nerdclub lans).

Looks like.. (at this present time)

The Wolverine and Spade (Dynamic Duo) will be there with weapons unholstered and ready to lay the smack down on some would be 'l33t'. :hotbouns:

I was told that some guy named 'xeno' was planning on whoopin' us into shape.... is this true?  A challenge of sorts?  hmmmmm?

The story begins......
'Xeno' is already seated. He has his pc started with keyboard and mouse in hands. Properly positioned for the best ability to crush the opposition with ease!

Just then, the door of 'Welcome' for all would be competitors opens as fog billows in from all around. Flashing red, blue, green lights are seen through the fog as 4 people walk in. Who is this? Could it be?  It can't be! But maybe it is!

Xeno speaks to himself..."I can only imagine what they look like.. I have heard stories.. Something like '8 ft tall.... mice are welded to right hands, keyboards to the left,  they have IV drips of Bawls during competitions'...But those are myths I believe."

Finally the four walk through the fog. Zwarrior, OpieSilver, Spade, Wolverine.  There is a hush over the room like the sound of silence after a flood destroys everything in its path. They walk in with pride and prestige. The have their gear in one hand and the IV drip of Bawls in the other. Fear fills the room but it doesn't seem to penetrate them or phase them in anyway. Will this be the 4 man crew that will take the championship?

At this point in time, Wolverine tells his crew to stop moving. He sniffs the air as if to warn of something in the air. He walks slowly threw the many competitors who have arrived before them. He slows down as if the hunt is about over. He stops next to a guy named 'Xenophobia'. He nods to the crew. They walk over to him and look at this unknown character. They reply to Wolverine with a "yep,... we agree!"

Xenophobia who is now perplexed and is curious what they were  saying asks Wolverine, "Hey you, Wolverine, what were they agreeing with you about?"  :8o:

Wolverine in a calm voice replies, "I smell FEAR and you reek of it." :mg-lft:

to be continued..............

Team |DUG| might be lured in from retirement if there were massive amounts of strippers and a few kegs at said LANs.

Okay... |DUG| is being officially challenged by PING. Champions at the last 2 Ambush Parties. You are challenged to a 4 on 4, Unreal Tournament CTF tourney at the next Ambush Lan Party scheduled (TBD).

Let's see if |DUG| still has 'the stuff'

Ahh, I feel the love!

Unfortunately, I as well as DUG have long ago retired from UT.  Currently I'm playing BF1942, AA, and as always, Tribes 2 which is my drug of choice.  I just can't kick that game.

Godspeed is a Wolfenstein hor now.  Moe has new addition to the litter, and also dabbles in Wolfenstein.

I can't seem to get anyone from DUG to attend a LAN here in SC, let alone travel anywhere else to play.  Top that off with the fact that they don't even consider playing UT any more, and I'm feeling pretty lonely up here...  :(

I may still show up now and then at your gigs.  If for no other reason than just to stop in and say hi, after a trip to Best Buy...  If you have a BF1942 gig, I might be able to scare up a team depending on the date.   :)

opie I don't remember you from the cove?  You know they have a 2k3 server out now don't you?

I am not sure.  We have talked about working with the church to bring a line into the cafeteria.  Wouldn't take much other than a freed up data port and some cable.

We'll put that in the discussion list.

Title: sponsor
Post by: ZWarrior on January 20, 2003, 01:10:15 PM
Not a ton, I would have to look into it.  The main risk though would be crackers trying to hack the network.  Unless, that is, we can get a router that we can put in to protect their network from access in the cafeteria.

That might work, need to take a look at that.

We could even put an advertising/sponsoring spin on it.  Come see what it's like to play on a broadband connection.  See if they will throw in a cable modem, or a few months of free service.
Title: sponsor
Post by: ZWarrior on January 21, 2003, 11:27:03 AM
Now that's an idea.  Maybe that spin would have Cox willing to hookup a Cable modem for the event, as promotional work.  They could work on signing up more people on broadband that way.

The air handler room does have cox in it but if I am not mistaken, it is where cox comes into the building and is a splice point only.  We would have to find out where they have mounted their box and then be downstream of that.  I beleive their box is downstream of this splice point.  Secondly for as cheap as routers are these days, I think we all would throw in $10 for the router, knowing we would have internet access at lan days.  The Linksys routers with 4 port hub have been onsale these days for about $50.

Thats a good idea! I would really like to come over whenever you have a LAN practices. I would love to show you a cool technique with the shock rifle. Well, a good practice technique is to play morpheus and have only two people in the game and both load up on SR ammo and have one person be stationary on a tower and have the other person just shoot the SR secondary plasma ball at the other while moving sparatically throughout the area from a distance. The stationary person is to shoot only the plasma balls out of the sky. Continue this until out of ammo (50), then rotate people.
I understand that this is on a low-grav map, but it is good practice for hitting the plasma balls.
If you want, practice on a map with any grav settings and shoot secondary, dodge in anydirection (accept forward really) and then shoot primary. I don't know what your button settings are but i use the 1st mouse button for primary fire and 2nd mouse button for (you guessed it) secondary fire. I'm sure you all have these settings, but you can never be sure.
Anyway, please email me or post whenever you have practices so i could join.

You guys could get alot of advertising on IRC. I don't know if anyone uses it now, but login to eastgamesnet and the channel is #omaha. or you could make your own channel in there. that would be cool.

another thing, Wolverine talks about laying the smack down in UT on everyone, but when we played UT2k3, i stomped him into the ground. Wolfy, were you just not playing your best, were you messing with me, or having an off day?

Maybe i need to bring some UT2k3 skillz to the table and own you!!! :):D:D

Wolverine was beaten beyond belief by KrazyKK_D86.  I was NOT having an off day, NOT messing with you.

I was destroyed, spanked, killed, beaten, demolished!

I plead, "Do not come and whoop me in UT regular, because I feel like I am actually getting the hang of that game."

That sounds like a challenge! I would love to hone my skills on UT2k3 with ya. I am always looking for someone to compete with me in 2k3 (i would say ut 1 but no one likes to play me) If you want to play me, set a time or you could come over to OSG and play me (i hang there a lot). Also, there is a quake 3 tourny at comp usa on march 3rd if anyone would like to go.
by the way, I've been working on the bio-rifle on both UT games. I love it!!!

All I can say is, you have inspired us to work on the combo.  Many of the teams we faced at Netwar learned what the power of the combo was.  I haven't seen that much scorched earth in a LOOOONG time.  Like since facing you in Waverly! ;)

well fellas, i just played Krazykk and we've discussed it and we are forming a duo in UT2K3 and hopefully we can get more people to join our "team". He's been one of the best people I've played in a looooong time, and as Ambush learned to respect the Shock rifle so have i the translocator. Even in a distance map he managed to frag me tons with the TL. Great game.  See ya at the next LAN folks.

The thing about playing against you is the first time it truely is a suprise to see your style.  The suprise is over now and techniques been developed to combat your particular style.  The party is over in UT for you.

As for UT2K3, we don't play it very much as a team, but I can teach anyone to be good a bombing run in a couple of minutes.  The game as a whole is way too Quake-ish for the most of us to really get into.

Post by: Slider on February 23, 2003, 06:56:17 PM
tru, i have a certain style, as anyone who plays UT does. However, yours have already have been weighed the first encounter. that is how I dominated you at the UT CTF tourny at nerd club. If you would like to challenge me 1 vs 1, that would be cool.

If you wanted to challenge me 2 vs 1, that would be even better, it's not that I would die less but rather that I get into the groove faster when there are more targets aiming for me. However, not in capture the flag because of the extra objective that I can't outrun ( meaning when I'm the only one on the team, it's easy for the oposition to outrun me with the flag when everyone on his or her team is gearing down on me. kinda like everyone against me in basket ball.... no fun.....i cry alot).

No I dont practice with Godlike bots, and no I dont sit at home playing 4 or more hours a day (mostly cause my comp died about a month ago). I just play to understand fully how all of the weapons work and  practice my aiming (you dont need bots or people to practice this) .

My favorite gun in UT (unlike popular belief) is not the shock rifle. I use it in 2k3 because the other weapons fall short.....literally) and I used it mostly in the Oribital map because I wasn't in a position to get a sniper rifle when I was holding your flag in my base while everyone else on my team was trying to get our flag back. Since it has a ranged and an insta hit weapon, I knew I could take out the snipers from the top back platform and also clear about 3-4 people at the same time with the combo. My  style is dominant because it's adaptive, not because i jump around like a silly no0b.  I prefer the bio-rifle and Pulse-rifle in close quarter matches, and for "duh" reasons i like the shock-rifle and sniper rifle for distance maps. I am not to interested in the Insta-gib translocator, not because it is not effective which it is (i know this first hand playing against KrazyKK sheesh ), but rather that I prepare for the matches that the admin sets for no translocators, like in most domination matchs. It would suck to be so dependent on weapon only to have it taken away from you when it counts.

I know I am not the best at UT, or probably not even in the top 30%. I just  learn to try to understand the game and everything there is to know about it, and I am still learning alot, and I love to teach people optimal way of practicing, especially in 2k3.

I am also confused as to why you think that I would somehow play you at nerd club then sit on my thumb afterward while you were practicing tactics against my "style". I will admit, I didn't really start practicing much until I read the forums all of you left about the 1-2 combo. Once I read that everyone will practice with that rifle and practice tactics against it, what do you think I did? That's right, switch weapons . Please tell me you did the same and prepared for it.

I'm hoping this has somehow inspired you to practice more. GL

Actually, it wasn't so much that we disliked the gun, just that most people really don;t use that weapon.

For my part, I found that I could pretty much adapt to your style unless I faced the blue gun.   You were so dominant with it at Waverly, that I was thrown off my groove.  What you did was point out to us a glaring problem with our tactics.  Suddently we were facing a weapon that we hadn't had to face in the hands of someone who knew how to use it.

I feel like we owe you a debt of gratitude for that.  Now we are more aware of what was once more of a overrated gun.

I agree with you regarding your choice of the pulse gun by the way.  A VERY effective close quarters weapon, just ask Spade! ;)

Don't sell your skillz short though, you have more than just the ability to use that weapon on your side.  I saw what you could do, and I respect you very much as an opponent.  It was an honor to get spanked by you.  Only wish we could have played another map to see how it worked out then.

I am really looking forward to watching you play at Lan-Bush! Slider.  It sould be a lot of fun to see it from the spectator view instead of the target view! :D

( BTW, Opie wasn't trying to dis you, just let you know that he is training to respond to that weapon as well as he does the others. )

Slider, I wasn't trying to pee in your cheerios.  I meant no disrespect in any way.  I very much like a challenge and you by far have presented the most interesting one in quite a while.

My favorite weapon is the sniper rifle.  Just ask anyone.  There are maps the no one likes to play me on, and for good reasons too.  CTF-Orbital is one of my most hated maps.  I just plain don't play that map very well, and I know it's just a mental block.

I'm am looking forward to meeting you in competition again.  Your a worthy opponet and there just aren't that many around anymore.

KrazyKK and myself played some UT2k3 the other night. Woohoo...that was a BLAST!   I got my butt handed to me in a paper bag...and THEN he lit it on fire!  I have seen my desperate need to grow in UT2k3 and I am taking necessary steps to do that. Not to dis my clan in any way...but I decided to venture out and play with KrazyKK and Slider in UT2k3 at LANbush 2003.

As far as regular UT, Slider, you were an awesome oppenent in Waverly, as you will be at LAN-bush 2003.  I enjoy the challenge of a great player as yourself. It shows me my weaknesses, it teaches me to continue to adapt, and inspires me to continue to become better.

Hey! what clans for sure are going to be there at Lanbush? I'm gona bring one when I get a select Group put  together fully. So far, it's KrazyKK and I, but there are still people in competition for the other 2 spots that are from OSG. It'll be fun to get a tryout tourny going there and seeing all of the no0bs go crazy on each other.  I think its funny just to see the people try to play UT 1 after they spent sooooo much time playing its sequel. I'll be the first (or a close second) to admit that they are totally different in control and weapon power and usage (ie. translocator limit, link gun power, NO FRICKEN ENFORSERS). I try to keep the skills honed in both games by playing one, then the other right after.

also, I would love to play vintage games like starcraft. While were at it, I'll try to bring Rise of the Triad. helllllllll yaaaaa!! haven't touched that game since my 486DX2 days. lol. I actually did some research on the game and found out that it was the 1st FPS to allow you to look up and down. some people thought that it was heretic to do this...nope. Also (check this out) it was actually going to be the sequel to Wolfenstein 3D. But they just droped it in the last minute. http://www.apogee1.com/rott/originalspec.html

hey guys, I was wondering if you would want to set up times during the week or weekend that we could all play UT games. For instance, if anyone wants to practice deathmatch we could set up an ip on wednesday at 7:00-9:00 pm, or those teams who want to scrim against another team would organize it on tuesday at 6:00 pm. I would be willing to set up a dedicated for any group who wants to play or who is brave enough to battle 1v1 with me (i play reg settings and original maps). Dont worry about the connection speed because I have killer bandwidth here at 120th w.center. Also, KrazyKK would probably be willing to have a dedicated going 24hours a day for those who want to jump on. I just want to play online with people i know and  not against some 12yr old with aimbot and 249 ping cause we all know that will get you noting but frustration in the end.

Oh I said "Hello", didn't you get the message when I let loose with the barrage of RPGs?

I left the server because I got real tired of outlaw and his instagib kills.  He would suddenly drop down and get a headshot on the way down, or I would come up from behind, and just as I open up, he would spin and headshot me.  It was a little TOO coincidental that he always killed me with a headshot.  Left the old Pi server for our server.

I just about had a heart attack it was so close. I took the 1v1 deathmatch and won the g-force FX 5200 (which in my opinion, is a step down from the Ti 4600).

how bout some rtcw at one of these tourneys? i know of at least two 6man squads that live in the omaha area. you could also knock down the team sizes to 4-5. face it, the game has better controls/aim/speed and graphics than counterstrike. more newer players at the event will get into it than an old game like counterstrike. (im not anti cs either, i can't wait for cs2).

Not enough people show up that play it to warrant a tournament.

Heck, the ONLY tournament that went off this last event was the UT2K3 tournament, all the rest didn't have enough teams or players.

I know that I will be unavailable for the next Mic's, as I will be out of town.  However, it being a holiday weekend, I would bet that the turn out will be pretty low.  Almost as low as when GZA was on Monday nights! :D

We try to schedule away from holiday weekends, that reduces the conflicts with family things.

I did not notice if this was said becase there are alot of posts for this.

Try posting in the OmahaWeeklyReader
some time if you plea a case, or have them do a report they don't charge .
if you post in their want ads online it is free (I know wantads are lame but just a suggestion) the reader is well read.

also word of mouth is pretty good too.

This is just any idea but does anybody have a big van?  First you load it up with some LAN gear and games then find someone who is a good car artist who is willing to donate for a good cause(AMBUSH!) and have him paint a logo and whatnot then travel around with your new Mobile LAN gaming van... Make money and promotes and its not that hard to do.:D

You think your buddy might want a little side work?

some stick welders have both AC and DC current to weld with. for some metals you need DC instead of AC

Woops, as you can see high school welding classes from four years ago are sliping away. Thanks Dragon for the spelling lesson. He is certified, as far as I know. He has used a TIG welder before we made some aluminum panels for a subwoofer box ( looked sweet )
the only welding a can do good at is MIG and can weld pretty good with Oxy-Acedlyne (I know it is spelled wrong...)"

I grew up hanging around a truck body shop.  I fixed their mainframe and they taught me welding.  Most of it was on aluminum boxes for truck bodies.  IF I can get a welder for my birthday I won't need the help.  If not, I've got to find someone who will do the welding for me cheap.  I perfer to use stick welders because I've got my CO2 tank hook up to a low pressure regulater and solinoid for aquarium use.
