I can put together a dream system for less than a thousand, without monitor.

Now if you can find me a working Linux kernal compiled for a MIPS R14K processor, I might just have to revise that number by a million or two.

Then I'll say 2000 max.  More than that and congress would cut off my funding.

For $2000.00 you could build a good box but it would not be with a monitor.  A good monitor alone will cost you $500.00 or a dream monitor will be over a $1000.00.  The one I want is about $2000.00.  My box cost about $2,300.00 when I was all done.  Most everything was retail due to timeline and convinience.  My next one will be a shopping spree of parts at the best prices but will not include OEM components.  I would challange any of you to show a list of components you think is worthy to boast about for less then $2000.00. 8)

So, 2k to 4k huh?  Even though at about half the cost, you could have a machine that runs with 1 - 2 % less performance.
I dunno.  If I were to prioritize the the goods, I'd put together a good system(1000), a good monitor (500), and blow my wad on super high end vid card (500).

But if any of you ever want that 4K system, you just come on over and see Uncle Del.:hat

I always build my own PC. I add parts here and there and then do a complete new PC about every couple years. Or whenever I have enough money!!!

On that note, I started this thread to discuss those items that would make it work better.

Book: Very specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzy around the area of kneecaps.

You know, last time that I bought a whole PC at one time was in 1987.  At that time I paid $1800 for a Mac Classic with 4mb of Ram and a 512mb hd.  Had to buy an external 1200 baud modem for an extra $400.  But man that black and white 10" display rocked!:buttrock:

Lessee... In 1987 I was using my Atari 1200XL to write proggys in BASIC, and play games that I bootlegged.

My first Intel PC was a XT that I got when I started classes at Gateway Electronics Institute.  It had a 5 1/4" drive, 64K RAM, no mouse, 12" amber monitor, and a monochrome card.

I added an 80MB HD, a VGA card, 14" VGA monitor, a mouse, took it up to 1024K RAM.  I was STYLIN'!

Dagum thing weighed a ton though!

Commodor 64 was my first, then upgraded to 128.  Screamin!  Then my Dad finally got a 486  with winders on it, and I finally figured out why my friends liked computers.

Hmm, my system has cost less than $1000, of course I've procured a couple of components.  But I did list what I would put into the $1500 machine .  I think it would be capable of some bragging rights.  It might not be the absolute fastest machine, but it's better than what most people make a showing with.

BTW, Morpheus, I pointed a guy here at work to that thread, and he is putting your recommendations to the test.

Let ya know what comes of it!

My lawyer :hat: said to make sure he signs the nonrepudiation paper beforehand.  I don't want to be held responsible for any problems.  i expect that i would do even more research if I was actually going to buy that machine.  I researched just the motherboard for 4 weeks before I purchased my current one.  But expect he will be very happy, especially if he changes it to match his specific tastes.  By the way, I made an edit to the motherboard section on the 26th.
