Installing Windows XP or any OS for a matter of fact is generally a pain. Sitting in front of your computer for 45 minutes answering questions isn’t exactly the best way to spend your time. Finally, There is a Solution.
To do an unattended installation of Windows XP you need to work with the set up , it is located on the Windows XP CD-ROM in X:SupportToolsDEPLOY.CAB (X=CD-ROM drive letter) by default: Extract the contents of this file and you can find some very useful tools and help files; the one we need is setupmgr.exe. This is a wizard application that will take you through the process of creating an answer file called winnt.sif and it can be used to guide the Windows XP Setup through the unattended installation. Now, there is still one thing that Setup Manager doesn't add your cd key. But, you can still add this to the unattend.txt file manually. Open this file in Notepad and add the following line under the [UserData] section:

ProductID=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Next, copy winnt.sif to a floppy, put your Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD drive, and reboot: When the CD auto-boots up, it will look for the unattend.txt file in A: automatically, and use it to answer the Setup questions if it's there.

I tryed to try It last night and It wouldent look for the disk so I dont know.....

But If You do get it to work there is a lot of options you can set in the answer text that you cant set in setup i.e. your start page in IE and desktop resolution ect.

I am going to look into it more and see what I did wrong.... I dident have the floppy as a boot device and you might have to...

Normally, you have to run the setup.exe with a flag to tell it where the install script is. Standard fare for Windows installs.

When tweaken XP there is a diferance on some of these if you have the SP1 update installed MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP.I've done some of them and my system falled to boot. Thanks for Ghost

Thought I'd just show you lot this weird program I found that lets you use another pc either on a network or via modem on your own local machine. Been using it for over 4 years. it's a great product, unless you are connecting to a Windows 2000 server. Then you can just use Terminal Services. I used it here in my office for quite a while until upgrading to WinXP Pro, which has a built in Remote Desktop server.

VNC is good, as it has two ways to connect to it. You can use the client tool, or use a Java-enabled web browser, which most of us have anyway.

The only drawback is that it really takes a lot of resources. it will slow down both the target PC, and your PC when using it. But it's free, and easy to use.

WARNING. We have just had two of our main computers trashed by a program called BootStar. It has rendered our expensive SCIS hard drives only fit for the dustbin. So be warned by our experience. God only knows what this is going to cost. Thus you can appreciate that we are in a problem zone for keeping our web site up to date at the present.
